JWST has captured Neptune’s auroras for the first time! The most distant planet from the Sun has a magnetic field tilted at a strange 47-degree angle, causing auroras away from its poles. Webb also found Neptune’s upper atmosphere has cooled by hundreds of degrees—likely why its auroras remained undetected for so long.

BUT WE HAD MUSIC

by Maria Popova

Right this minute
across time zones and opinions
people are
making plans
making meals
making promises and poems

while

at the center of our galaxy
a black hole with the mass of
four billion suns
screams its open-mouth kiss
of oblivion.

Someday it will swallow
Euclid’s postulates and the Goldberg Variations,
swallow calculus and Leaves of Grass.

I know this.

And still
when the constellation of starlings
flickers across the evening sky,
it is enough

to stand here
for an irrevocable minute
agape with wonder.

It is eternity.

「 A strange-looking telescope that scanned the skies from a perch in northern Chile for 15 years has released its final data set: detailed maps of the infant universe showing the roiling clouds of hydrogen and helium gas that would one day coalesce into the stars and galaxies we see today 」

Back in 1915, Einstein put forth his most ambitious idea: the general theory of relativity, combining #gravity with #relativity to create an entirely new conception of our #Universe.

In most conventional circumstances, the predictions of Einstein’s theory are indistinguishable from that of its predecessor: Newton’s law of universal gravitation.

Is it possible, then, to somehow reduce Einstein’s equations down to Newton’s equations?

Big ThinkAsk Ethan: Can we turn Einstein's equations into Newton's law?Einstein's General Relativity has reigned supreme as our theory of gravity for over a century. Could we reduce it back down to Newton's law?

A "potentially hazardous" pyramid-size asteroid is about to zoom past Earth at around 48,000 mph (77,300 km/h) this week as it reaches its closest point to our planet in more than 100 years. But the hefty space rock poses zero risk of hitting us now or in the future, data shows. @LiveScience

Dark #energy is probably doing something weird, and we don’t know why.

Astronomers just announced they’re seeing more evidence that dark energy — the mysterious substance that pervades the #cosmos and causes the expansion of the #universe to accelerate — is not a constant over time, but may instead be weakening.

It means dark energy has changed over time, getting weaker and changes how we think the universe behaves in a fundamental way.
