It's scary season (the week before the U.S. election). Virgil composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature: the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. This mosaic portrait of Virgil is not the finest one in artistic terms, but it is the only one we have.

According to tradition, Virgil traveled to Greece in 19 BC to revise the #Aeneid. ... After crossing to Italy by ship, weakened with disease, #Virgil died in Brundisium harbor on 21 Sept 19 BC. Because the Aeneid was unfinished, his dying wish was for the manuscript to be burned ... Augustus, however, salvaged it, thus saving it for the ages.... It must have been fate!
