Eugen @Gargron

Someone brought to my attention that there is a Twitter account impersonating the Mastodon project. This is a fake account: twitter.com/MastodonTM

- We don't do the business of selling blue or green checkmarks
- We don't have "office hours"
- We don't collect donations on behalf of disasters (unless you consider me a disaster)
- I would know how to spell Houston for god's sake

- We never use Twitter's logo in branding or illustrations. Fluffy elephant sitting on the bird is a photoshop in bad taste. We are competing with centralization, not one single specific company
- For that matter, I would never use graphics that are that low res

I also really don't use Twitter that much. I actually see 0 reason to use a Twitter account for Mastodon. However, there is one "official" one, and it is: twitter.com/MastodonProject

@gargron "complete freedom of speech! #Huston #Texas" oh this feels so wrong

@CobaltVelvet Wrong on so many levels! Mastodon is not a US project. To tag it with Texas feels like American imperialism.

@gargron yes but, even ignoring all the ways in which it is factually wrong, it looks like it was written by an american fascist boasting about Texas

@CobaltVelvet @Gargron Attribution could be difficult. Pointing out that it is a fraud should be sufficient.

@sillystring @gargron yes of course it's a feeling, i'm not saying nazis are squatting mastodon on twitter

@Gargron @CobaltVelvet I'm gonna go and guess they're trying to squat ~trending~ topics to get people to send them money for their dodgy shit like "verification" and "donations"

@gargron @CobaltVelvet Even us Americans throw up in our mouth a little bit when we see something tagged with Texas.

Sorry, Texans. But your state sucks.

@Gargron Hrm. Twitter hasn't given you a green checkmark or banned the impersonator. Big surprise.

@gamehawk @theoutrider @gargron I reported as 'spam' because there was no 'imposter' or 'squatter' option. I'm not sure T's staff / algorithm will figure it out.

@lnxw48a1 @theoutrider @Gargron Hmm. There is such an option in Tweetdeck, though it's a second-level one and it's not obvious which first-level choice gets to it.

But then again I'm never sure just how much weight the Tweetdeck reports actually carry (despite it being Twitter-owned these days).

@gamehawk @Gargron @lnxw48a1 on web Twitter it's under "they're being harmful or abusive", yeah

@Gargron from the "office address" they posted at some point it looks like it's this place: yelp.co.uk/biz/tubemogul-emery

@Gargron I have reported the account. Hope it helps.

@gargron Did you report the account as impersonating "your brand"?

@Gargron weird, judging by their tweets they had their own instance and were called “TrendicTM” and at some point just switched to “MastodonTM” and sort of pretended to be behind mastodon.social?

@Gargron how to report them? What reason should I pick?

@charlag @gargron can this not also be reported to the actual Police for your district (if they have a cybercrimes unit?) This is surely also ID theft and fraud which are crimes just about everywhere in the World?

@Gargron idk if to call them out on their scam or just ignore them o_o

@bentosmile I wouldn't call them out directly, but I did report them for impersonation and RTd Gargron's tweets about it. (And posted something of my own to let people know.)

@Gargron I think it would be a good idea to report them to Twitter. They could potentially cause issues and you could get the blame.

Appears the run by this person: twitter.com/reppns and they've been suspended multiple times. They don't seem to have learned any lessons yet.

@Gargron you might want to actually register the TM just to make sure...

@Gargron Their "office" would also not drift back and forth across the USA, either. ;)

@Gargron You would also never even consider to register on Twitter.
