I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's

Vin

@Gargron this is probably my single biggest issue with this platform. maybe 10% of quotes get used like that, every other time it's either to boost engagement while providing commentary, to get more people involved in a discussion while not necessarily endorsing (as reposts are often interpreted), or just to ask a question that's too tangential to the original post

quotes don't crush discussion. they promote it.

@Gargron perhaps most obviously though, people are already doing it. this is exactly what happened on twitter, the functionality was added in because people would link to each other's tweets all the time and it got hard to follow. it's even worse on mastodon because you end up linking to other instances and it becomes impossible to engage. quotes would fix this issue

@Gargron even now, my replies will of course never be seen because this is a 4 year old post. but if I could quote, it would breathe new life into it. quotes allow for old but still-relevant posts to get a second wind. on twitter people will often even quote their own old tweets because of this effect

@Grapevine @Gargron most quotes like you're talking about are just someone saying "this" and adding fuck-all to the convo. use akkoma instead of Mastodon if you wanna quote, stop bothering Eugen.
@jez @Grapevine @Gargron the solution already exists in alt activity pub implementations like akkoma and pleroma (which in general offer many superior features to the more popular mastodon while also running much faster, there are some things lacking though). moving to one of these instances is easy and you can quote tweet to your heart's content
