Seriously though, follow the governance and you can find some answers to your questions. Top-down dictatorship with the top guy surrounding himself with people who are as opaque as they come. It is a tight ship that doesn't care about what any of us think. They are doing this because they are feeling the pressure of Bluesky.

At least with Mastodon, you can operate your own community outside the scope of another person who is running the code and their instance. If you want to run independently without federation, you can do that.
Bluesky is different from Mastodon; Mastodon is only a type of instance that you can use to connect to the ActivityPub federation.
While Bluesky, modular, tries to become AP on its own, but AFAIK cannot run by itself.

I think there is more to the mastodon as a script/application to run as an instance than the mastodon as a service that you use.
By the way, the one who decided the policy and policed your post in your instance is the administrator of your instance.

I'm taking a wait-and-see approach. If they say they're gonna do trust, then I'll hang around for the magic, and I'll read the stuff they publish. In the mean time, I'm going to let them have a crack at it, because borking efforts in the safe-but-free-enough spaces is exactly what keeps those spaces from existing.
Your own server is always an option. You are bound by the communities you choose no matter which they are.

@Mastodon It would be really nice if the page wasn't so vague and ambiguous about what this role would do, it isn't clear about what the job of this person would be, what specific measures or things this person would do to ensure "trust and safety" and what do you even mean with "trust" to begin with?

Concurrently, anyone who has not experienced systemic misogyny is similarly unprepared. It is vital that Mastodon do this Differently than so many before, who assumed that awareness was the same as lived experience, or that all lived experience was the same. My 2 cents.

@Mastodon every trust and safety tool mastodon has has been implemented over eugen's objections. until the problem of the project being directed by the bizarre and inconsistent delusions (such as this idea mastodon will somehow become a hub of resistance under trump — eugen is also on record as stating he would help the federal government set up a presence on mastodon if they asked) of a single man, i don't see how hiring one more person for him to ignore will help

What are the responsibilities of this Head position, since they will obviously be very different than someone in the same position with the responsibilities of a centralized network?
