@dansup @cedric - the Diaspora protocol can link up with ActivityPub, e.g. my Friendica account has no problem communicating with my Diaspora account.

@TotalSonic @dansup indeed, I know.

Actually putting this project in the category of "sillos project" (à la Instagram, Facebook, etc) is not super nice for them. They are against sillos from the beginning. And ofc it depends what you call a sillo. I think I know.

I also do not want a single protocol (or couple of protocols all compatible together). Sillos can be good and help inovation. I like disconnected networks. People will always continue to try new things, break, build, etc.

@TotalSonic @dansup and sadly for Diaspora, the project seems not really alive. I follow it since like 10 years. They were here early... I am not sure they are fundamentally against ActivityPub. I would be surprised that they are still able to implement this properly, today. Sadly.

@cedric @dansup - development is still happening on Diaspora, they released 0.9 in June 2024, and pr's are already being made for 1.0, but yes, it is slow.
But Friendica really needs some help too, in my usage I find the gui is super cluttered and overly complex, with important functions (such as finding and connecting with Contacts, or just saving ones profile pic) too hidden, or buggy when setting these.

@TotalSonic @dansup
Yes, I know. However, the development rate is too slow. If you look at the details and commits, it's clear that progress has been limited. I really hope this project gains more attention. And hopefully a proper connection with the Fediverse. I am sure this would be even good for Diaspora, more users, more visibility. But, it's a ten years project, small community, ...

That said, being realistic, I don't think the future looks shiny for this project— I hope I'm wrong!

@cedric @dansup - another thing there is official mobile apps for both iOS and Android for Diaspora (called "insporation*") where as Friendica only has Fedilab or Raccoon as options on Android. And in trying to get some "normie" friends and fam to migrate off of FB to Friendica, I found they encountered a bunch of issues which frustrated them and made them not use it ultimately.

@cedric @dansup - Diaspora's lack of ability to edit posts, even after all these years since it first came out, kinda sucks though. But it handles being able to categorize contacts and target posts nicer than Friendica does. For me a new Fediverse platform which combined the best of Diaspora and Friendica would be optimal, but I am not a developer, so I just use both.

@TotalSonic @dansup I agree. Maybe better with a new ActivityPub powered patform...
And in the same time, Diaspora network deserve to exist, even if disconnected from the Fediverse. It's totally fine for me to create plenty of accounts on various websites 😅

@TotalSonic @dansup @cedric Friendica only manages to connect to Diaspora because Friendica implements the Diaspora protocol, not because Diaspora is compatible with ActivityPub.

Diaspora previously stated they weren't going to add ActivityPub protocol because they put a lot of resources into developing their Diaspora protocol before ActivityPub even existed, so they don't want to replace their protocol with ActivityPub and they don't have the resources to implement and maintain both protocols

@TotalSonic @dansup @cedric I recall that they also weren't super happy with the fact you can't do true profile migration with ActivityPub (yet) whereas they put a lot of effort into building this functionality into their protocol.
