@_elena great post! I'm very tempted to self host but I worry Mastodon/federated socials are not being adopted as much as they could.

It would be great if the EC, governments or even local councils could stand up some instances and start using them more. I think that would persuade the bulk of the population, who are overwhelmingly time-short and not tech-savvy, to take the plunge. Otherwise everyone will stay on Instagram and X.

@_elena

"An act of rebellion".

Ça résonne en moi plus que tu peux imaginer.

@_elena @elena Thanks for the writeup Elena :) It's worth noting that we do federate the interaction policy on a status, so while most server types don't understand what they can and can't do yet with regard to interacting with a status, other GoToSocial instances at least respect interaction policies of remote statuses and don't send an unwelcome reply -- or even allow a user to try to send it. It's not *just* server-side filtering of replies, your status itself also advertises what sort of interactions are and aren't permitted on it when it's sent off into the fediverse. So in the future as more softwares read + adopt interaction policies themselves, it will become rarer that a server doesn't recognize them and broadcasts an unwelcome reply anyway. We hope anyway!

@dumpsterqueer Are Interaction Policies standartized, like part of ActivityPub or an extension to it? :blobcatthinkowo:

@gotosocial is pioneer with adoption, though I'm a bit worried if other servers will rush to implement Interaction Policies too :blobcatthinkowo:

It would be great if Interaction Policies would be in all Fediverse servers by default, for sure :ablobcatbongo:

@_elena @elena

@dumpsterqueer @_elena @elena currently this is only implemented per status type, right? could it in the future work per each post as well? so clients could have an option like "disable replies for this post" when making a post or something? :3

@aylamz @_elena @elena yes! You can already do that via the API but only maybe one or two clients support it (fedicat does I think)

@_elena @elena

I gave the custom emojis clear, short descriptions in CamelCase so that they are fully accessible for people using screen readers. My profile reads: “my values are BlackLivesMatter Feminist HeartPride HeartTrans NoNazis.”

I think this shows a lot of care on accessibility. Thanks a lot!

And thanks for sharing your experience with GTS and to visibilize the diversity in the Fedi.

@_elena I love @yunohost , it's a real boon for self-hosting. I've got GoToSocial, an RSS Reader, git, a notes app, and a static site blog all running on my instance.

@_elena @yunohost Side note, yunohost has a module for running phanpy if you don't love the idea of signing into a frontend hosted somewhere else. I'm a fan of their boost carousel.

@_elena @shollyethan @ilja @gotosocial @gytisrepecka @Tusky @pinafore @phanpy @MonaApp @elk @elena it’s cool that I can follow someone on GtS from my mastodon account.

@_elena Thank you, that is a great post explaining Fediverse and how to get the most of it with :gotosocial: :ablobcatrave:

Very useful also for folks who had a first taste of federation and figured Mastodon is very clunky and certainly not the best option for small or single user instances :blobcatfingerguns:

@shollyethan @ilja @gotosocial @Tusky @pinafore @phanpy @MonaApp @elk @elena

@_elena @elena One configuration I do for my own interaction policies is as follows:

Public and Unlisted posts can be liked by anyone.

Public and Unlisted posts can be boosted by anyone.

Replies to public and unlisted posts are fine, so long as there's some kind of follow relationship (you follow me, or I follow you or mutuals) but everyone else (randos?) have to have their replies approved.

I've found this allows most conversations to flow without issue, but on the occasion when some rando shows up and wants to be a jerk about it, I can just "nope" their reply.

@fediversereport @shollyethan @ilja @gytisrepecka @Tusky @pinafore @phanpy @MonaApp @elk @elena @_elena Doesn't it require extreme knowledge of technology? From what I understand, it's not like a regular service, with a website, etc. I'm not even sure how to get a client like TweeseCake or TWBlue to work with it. I may be wrong about all of this, and if so, I apologise. But I was told it's very different from other networks in the Fediverse.

@dandylover1 YunoHost makes installing apps really easy - no need for technical knowledge. Setting up GoToSocial is a piece of cake.

I documented my whole process here: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/113667636910565210

@_elena @shollyethan @ilja @gotosocial @gytisrepecka @Tusky @pinafore @phanpy @MonaApp @elk @elena hey Elena, thanks for the write up. I have a similar journey but instead of using a vps I use a virtual machine at home. I have used vps for services for years, I wanted to test self hosting at home.
Previously I used Calckey or firefish as my instance, unfortunately that was discontinued so I deleted my server. I am now giving GoTosocial a try. So far so good.
I still have some issues to work out with my setup but they are not related to GTS.

aw sorry to hear you had to delete your server. I'm assuming migrating to Sharkey wasn't an option for you? (it's so gorgeous - my fave UX/UI in the whole Fediverse).

Anyhow, delighted to hear you are enjoying GoToSocial. I just downloaded the TestFlight of FediCat and I'm about to give it a try (apparently it works really well with GtS)

@_elena @elena Just read your article.
Congratulations on another great and concise piece of information regarding the Fediverse.

And couldn’t stop noticing your screenshot there. Walt Whitman Would be proud. 😁

@d1re_w0lf @_elena Aw thank you - I tried to be concise but I think that’s the longest blog post I ever published. Still, it’s so hard not to get into the myriad of ways GoToSocial is really cool.

And I’m embarrassed to ask: I didn’t get the Walt Whitman reference (so many screenshot I have in that post) 😅

@elena @_elena Sorry, I should have been more explicit, I meant this:

@_elena
I’m proud that the package I’m maintaining alone for years is used and so appreciated! It’s making me very happy ^w^
(I’m also very happy to see your enthusiasm for YunoHost, as a core YunoHost member!!)

Also, with the exposure you’re bringing to my YunoHost package of GoToSocial, I just want to tell that it’s using an unusual “non-free” license, and I just want to warn people you don’t want that:

If someone is interested to know why I made this quite strange choice: oniricorpe.eu/log/tech/2024-04
