When new users complain about spam and abuse, they’re often told that they have to *pay* for a well-moderated relay.

@socialmedianews

Also, while Nostr is decentralized, I don’t consider them part of the Fediverse because the point of it is to run through relays.

Perhaps is a better term for Nostr and similar protocols.

@ch0ccyra1n @atomicpoet TBH a lot of people are advocating to pay for moderation in Fediverse too. It's a job that needs to be funded. If not with advertisement then by paying to your server admins.

@proximacentauri @ch0ccyra1n There’s no excuse for allowing spam and abuse. If you can’t moderate, then don’t operate a server that’s open for everyone.

@atomicpoet @proximacentauri Ok, but there are also poorly moderated, free, open fediverse servers. This doesn't seem like it's inherent to the nostr protocol

@troethe @atomicpoet I think the difference is that Nostr relays send everything, including the abusive content?

It has this IPFS-like system, which in reality is probably illegal, because the ball stops with the server owner even if it's running "relay".

@proximacentauri
There's a significant difference between paying to utilize a server (which seems to be what @atomicpoet is referring to, although please correct me if I'm wrong) and donations to pay for server costs, which is what most of the fediverse servers with a few exceptions are up to.
