@dansup I cant tell if this is serious or not.
He wants documentation on how to click a follow button??

@ben after writing a book about javascript, wouldn't you want to retire and find a new hobby?

@ben yes, it a masterpiece. php forced lain to make a new implementation 😂

@dansup Does Pleroma not show an in-app follow button?

@Gargron @dansup the general complaint seems to be that the remote follow button requires loading that remote web page then being redirected back to your own site -- the fact that you can search for a URL or address directly is not intuitive, nor is it well-documented in the majority of existing user guides.

@trwnh @dansup Based on this it seems he's opened the timeline in-app but then somehow navigates away onto the public page instead of just clicking the in-app follow button

@Gargron @dansup I'm not sure this hypothetical dude@mastodon.social has been discovered, but idk...

FWIW looking back at the Mastodon documentation that I wrote, it seems even I gave it a scant two paragraphs, and perhaps that concept should be explained in more depth for new users... docs.joinmastodon.org/user/net

@trwnh @dansup Your guide is fine. This person's using Pleroma.

@Gargron @dansup It could still be explained more often and more thoroughly to new users in general. I think I'll add a screenshot and a paragraph specifically for discovering new profiles via search.

Yeah, that doesn't help Pleroma users, but still.

@Gargron @dansup It's hidden under search unless someone already followed you, but then that's a chicken and egg problem. Compounding this is the problem that there is no way for me to confirm my server is configured correctly, and Mastodon just gives you a weak single line error message about "requests not valid". For this to work I'd need a way to confirm my server conforms, and get decent actionable debugging messages when there's a failure. In addition to this is the stupidity of everyone else's comments about how I'm an idiot showing up on my zedshaw.com webstie. I have no idea how this wasn't flagged as a massive abuse vector.

@zedshaw I'd recommend joining the freenode irc channel, the pleroma team might be able to help you with some of your concerns!

@dansup I spent many years being abused by FreeNode dwellers and my optimal self-care strategy is to avoid IRC at all costs.

`config :pleroma, :instance, public: false` will disable timelines for unauthenticated users. though I guess an option to specifically disable federated timeline is useful

I think the remote folllow thing is a pleroma bug actually. it works fine on stable versions, but an endpoint was accidentally removed on the development version (which you are running) when removing OStatus, we will add it back

@dansup I find it hard to believe that Zed Shaw has very strong opinions on something he doesn’t understand. /s

He’s a super smart guy, but I will never understand why he does this.

@dansup honestly, I have a really hard time understanding why certain things like this are difficult for people.

I think I've been here so long that the conventions are second nature to me.

@sean @dansup this stuff isn't *that* hard. It is just different.

I haven't been on Facebook for years but even when I was I only used it occasionally and I would often find it bewildering. People I know who use it all the time never understood why a "computer guy" like me didn't find it easy.

Same goes with most things Google actually. Google shit seems far more user hostile to me than anything in the fediverse but people put up with it because Google.

@sean Even more unfathomable the tendency to rant about it elsewhere. @dansup
