I always get excited for but the month comes and goes without really doing anything because I don’t have a dedicated space to tinker.

So I’m giving myself the project of cleaning and reclaiming the finished attic room that this stuff lives in.

It’s not much but if I have some things plugged in and ready to go any time, maybe I can sneak some time to do something with it like join .

For your enjoyment here’s is a clean set of shelves and a Classic II on top. Baby steps!

What remains of the Apple stickers that came with my family’s first computer, the LC 475.

The Macintosh SE/30 is generally regarded as the ultimate compact Mac, but when it comes to looks I prefer the Classic and Classic II. It’s just… chefs kiss.

I dug out a PowerBook G4 12” and got it online with 10.4.11. Spent some time looking at FrogFind and Macintosh Garden.

There wasn’t a wired connection in a convenient spot, so I spun up a SSID with no password since it can’t connect to my WPA2/3 networks.

It’s terribly insecure but I’m only enabling the network when I am actively using that computer. It broadcasts from one AP set to low transmit power, and I added a MAC address filter so neighbors won’t randomly land on it.

After I shut down the PowerBook G4, I remembered that I already have the WebOne proxy server running on an ODROID. It’s been quite a while since I used it. I’ll have to configure the G4 to use that so it can access sites that require TLS.

Originally I was going to play with an iBook G3 tonight since it can natively boot OS 9. But it turned out that one has a wonky display cable and the screen only works at a super inconvenient angle. I’ll have to see if I can find a mini VGA adapter and revisit it later with an external display.

@dmnelson Love my Mac Classic II. Still have it; no ADB mouse or keyboard, though.

@tantramar I have a mouse and keyboard but mine hasn’t been recapped so I’m afraid to use it without getting that taken care of first.

@dmnelson Oh, I harbour no illusions about this thing ever booting again. It’s the Mac I cut my teeth on, though, so it has a place of honour. 🤓

@dmnelson Agreed! I’ve always enjoyed the SE/30.

@dmnelson although the first Mac I abducted was a Classic. 😬

@dmnelson I need to do that! The G5 is pretty much isolated from everything else. TLS does not work, and SSH key types are all incompatible with current ones. 😅

@dmnelson When I've messed around with internet on my vintage Macs I've done so by directly connecting my modern Mac to the old one with an ethernet cable and then sharing the wifi connection over Ethernet. So no insecure WiFi and the vintage Mac handles it as if it were directly wired.

@dmnelson I have one of those with the two large stickers remaining. I'm not game to use them on anything though.

@dmnelson This made me laugh, because I drilled a hole in the corner of my living room floor to bring an Ethernet cable up from the basement so my Lombard can sit noisily on the coffee table all month.
