Fesshole 🧻

Retired vet. Whenever someone brought in a perfectly healthy animal to be put to sleep, I always encouraged it to be done privately in their absence. If they agreed, I secretly sent the animal to some friends who run a rehoming centre. Still charged for the "euthanasia".

@fesshole I imagine a.lot.of them would approve if.ypu asked but bravo nonetheless! 👍

@baiteh @fesshole no shits like that often do it vengefully otherwise they'd just drop it at a shelter not pay hundreds of dollars to do the other thing

@fesshole what kind of psycho asks for a decently healthy animal to be euthanised?

@dch82 @fesshole almost every vet/vet nurse/tech I've ever known have talked about it being common. It's sad how many people think about their pets as objects rather than living creatures.

@dch82 @fesshole An aunt and uncle of mine, or so I was told by mum.

@webboy42 @dch82 @fesshole oh I didn't realize what you were responding to when I hit fave. Thought you meant your aunt and uncle also saved animals from being needlessly killed.

@acatwholovesyou @dch82 @fesshole Yeah, I can’t remember the details, but they definitely weren’t the life saving kind of dog people. Don’t know if they’re still jackasses like that, because I’ve never had much to do with them since they’re the most boring people I’ve ever known.

@dch82 @fesshole
The sort who drive out into the countryside and throw their pets out the car. 😡

@AlisonW @dch82 @fesshole we live in one of those rural, frequent "dump-off" areas, and currently have 2 adopted cats from the road. We also found one injured in the woods, and another rescued from drowning in the river. People are so mean to their critters!

If you need to have a pet put down, I feel like doing it yourself at least once can contribute to a proper perspective on the situation. Now I'll prefer to pay a vet for that.

@AlisonW@fedimon.uk Barbaric. The only decent thing to do is shoot them in the face and dump their body in a gravel pit. (More seriously, hoorah for fesshole's heroism.) @dch82@mastodon.social @fesshole@mastodon.social

@dch82 @fesshole Republicans, such as self-admitted dog murderer Kristi Noem.

@dch82 @fesshole
My brother, when he broke up with his girlfriend. Just to be a dick.

@fesshole euthanizing healthy animals should be illegal

@maxoakland @fesshole while I agree in principle, in practice unfortunately that would make animal shelters nearly unviable. 😔

@tedmielczarek @fesshole I never said it should be illegal for animal shelters. You can use context to understand that I was obviously talking about pet owners choosing to do that

@fesshole
An asshole tax. I heartily approve.

We've made that trip to the vet, and it was always the absolute last resort, when it was clear there was no other option. It's a heartbreaking responsibility.

If you're callous about the nonhuman lives in your care, that does not speak well for your desirability in human society, either.

@fesshole
I got one of those "supposed to be euthanised" cats, owners had driven over her tail and crushed it. She lived to be 15, had a little nubbin of a tail, and was smart and happy and beloved. Her companion cat was part of a litter dumped in plastic bags in a barn, he also lived to be 15 years old.
(Edited to add: cat rehoming was done with the previous owner's consent, they just didn't want her back without a tail.)

@fesshole I took a German Shepard (my favorite breed of dog) to my vet for euthanasia.

If the kids (4 @ 4-8 years of age) went running the Shephard followed its instinct and "took them down."

The vet tried to talk me out of it. I said "it's just a matter of time before this turns bad."

3 months later I saw that dog with another human pushing a stroller. I was furious! I told the owner the story. HE put the dog down himself.

F*ck any vet who does this!

@philpetree "Tech CEO" - why am I not surprised? I say this as a brother-in -law of a veterinarian who rightfully put down an elderly dog that developed problem behavior around her children that could not be resolved: Hope you treat those who work for you better than your non-human family members, and trust the guidance of experts rather than simply disposing of them.

Not to mention what the other (barely) human did was likely highly illegal, if I am understanding you correctly and he took matters into his own hands rather than also bringing the dog to a vet.

@philpetree @fesshole Your inability and unwillingness to properly train your dog is not the dog's fault.

@philpetree @fesshole "The vet tried to talk me out of it."

Wherever *do* veterinarians get the notion that they know more about animals than some random guy that wandered in off the street...?

@fesshole You sir are a fucking hero. Thanks for making my day.

@fesshole Are some people just not capable of building a connection with their pet? How can you see your pet as just a thing to abuse or throw away?

Why do such people get pets? Because it's socially expected? Because they want power over a living being?

I just don't get it.

I would live in a box and split the results of my panhandling with my pup (and hubby 😁) if it came to losing everythinge else. Or at the *very* least, find her a good, loving home with a family able to care for her.

@fesshole small disagree. This happened to my sis & BIL recently. If the vet had suggested trying to rehome, they might have gone for it, but doing it behind their backs was wrong imo. (Yes they found out)

They brought the dog in because it was chewing up everything in their home. They didn't want to surrender it because they worried if someone else got the dog, it would be abused. Yes I know this doesn't track w/lots of you but it was their thought.

@fesshole

I finally understand that story of the dog who led his new owner to a shallow grave, causing the previous owner to be sent up for murder one.

Ironically, it was Texas, and the guy was in fact...euthanized.

@fesshole This is great until the original owner sees their dead dog walking down the street.

@fesshole Love this. You were charged with metaphorically sending them to “a farm upstate” but, to the sure joy of children everywhere, you took that charge literally. I shall imagine all such cases are performed like this.
