I left zombie Twitter and so can you! Thoughts on mourning and online community: https://lifehacker.com/tech/i-quit-twitter-heres-how-it-went?ref=jhpMastodon
This is not my #xoxofest essay—that comes next week, probably. I pitched this article to Lifehacker a week ago, thinking it would be easy to write, only to find that my feelings were more complicated after the conference. Actual reflections on the conference will come later.
@jhpot I finally gave in and deleted my account a month ago. I'd also quietly quit a year or so back, but found myself sliding back and every single time it was like wading through a cesspool to find a few friends still there. I couldn't do it any more.
I too feel so much lighter. My account dated to early 2007 so I felt like I couldn't give that up.
@jwilker A thing that helped me give up was when they added a view count to every tweet. I was getting more likes here than views there sometimes, which really made posting there feel less important.
@jhpot ah yeah I noticed that on mine as well and engagement overall was nill. That definitely helped push me.
@jhpot I imagine one of the reasons people actually click on links and read stuff here is that there's waaaay less junk articles and AI generated content being shared around here. Lots of independent outlets putting out great articles. It's refreshing!
@dolitehgreat look at you responding to something from the middle of an article
Yeah, I do believe the lack of junk is a big part of the reason here, and that is something that could change as this place grows. I hope the community finds ways to alleviate that, though.
@Sammerman I never look at the comments but this made me laugh so thank you
@jhpot the only thing i liked on twitter, years before it landed in elons hand, and become a content dung bucket was ability to send posts via text message to a specific number they had
@jhpot I get it, I've become less active on there but I can't totally leave, it feels unfair, like when you see kids leaving a playground because the teenage bullies are there
I'm sure eventually there will be just the racist misinformists left there shouting into the void, but for now there are still some decent people/communities clinging onto their once celebrated safe space, so I guess I'm going down with the ship
At least until the lifeboats are filled and only the iceberg deniers remain
@Gwendlyn It’s hard! These transitions are never clean. You can mourn the thing even as it remains part of your life.
This Labour /Remain voting little lady in Leicester has left Toxic Twitter for this place and am now Following you, any chance of a Follow back?
