@Tom @jk I was rereading a well-regarded critical literary essay from the mid 90s the other day and came across the immortal line "it's difficult to tell if the Internet is legitimately big news."

@tomharris @Tom the internet is good but quite expensive, so i can only use it for an hour or two per day. the rest of the time i have to refer to one of my many CD-ROM encyclopedias

@jk @Tom I never got past the training areas on runescape because mum wouldn't let me use the dial-up for more than 45mins at a time

@tomharris @Tom @jk doesn't help that the tutorial is like an hour and a half of boring guff

while I was there there were numerous attempts to redesign it all of which initially focused on "make it less long and boring" and ended up bloating comically out of proportion

@theoutrider @jk @Tom I don't know if it's the same tutorial they had in 2002. Probably though.

@tomharris @Tom @jk yeah, they didn't get a proper rework out the gate until like 2010

which was still comically overcomplicated and an hour+ long but a lot more tolerable because it just lets you walk away and do something else rather than gating everything
