My 9-year-old nephew (who isn't white) was searching Google Images, with SafeSearch turned on, for NASA pictures. He found a meme that he thought was funny because it had a NASA logo and a snake.
It was an antisemitic meme with a swastika, a symbol which he's never seen before. I've gotta talk with him about Nazis and the internet now. And why is Google letting Nazi memes through when SafeSearch is enabled?

The internet has a _lot_ of things. How can you expect google to completely safeguard from the sheer volume of stuff out there?
That’s the risk you take with giving access to the internet to a young child. I’m sure google is taking what preventative measures that they can, but expecting them to filter everything is a little ridiculous.

@z I don't really expect them to. (I also don't want them to, if you turn off SafeSearch.)
Mostly I just hate Nazis.
@micahflee because the algorithms are only designed to filter out porn that is "tagged" as such. There was a fiasco a few years ago where people could search "My Little Pony" with SafeSearch on and still have brony porn get through the filter.
