Good news, everyone! We're Oracle

and we're desupporting Java 8 in September 2018 and we're also introducing a Java 9 BUT DON'T INSTALL IT SERIOUSLY DON'T INSTALL IT

because THEN in March 2018 we're introducing Java 18.3 BUT DON'T INSTALL THAT ONE EITHER because it's not Long Term Support, that won't be until September

exactly as your Java 8 goes no more security patches and

We're Oracle, and let's just say we want to watch the world burn.

@natecull Looks more like someone at Oracle wants to shake down their customers to pay for extended and "Sustaining Support" instead of riding for free.

They know that folks can't migrate to newer versions of Java that quickly, so they're going to fleece the ones who can't pay to upgrade.

@craigmaloney @natecull i just don't get it

i don't get The Enterprise

can you imagine being so stuck in your notion of "support" that you'd rather feed your kids to a cannibal, than to give a handout to your neighbour

@hirojin @natecull They're not kids, they're customers. That's the first way.

Customers are there to give you (Oracle) money. If they don't give you money then they aren't good customers. That's the second way.

In order to make them good customers you have to give them ample ways to give you money. If you don't then it's on you for not making them good customers. So you provide support plans that allow your best customers to continue to get support from you while giving you money. It's the way.

@craigmaloney @natecull I'M SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU FROM MY HIGH OPEN SOURCE HORSE HERE

@craigmaloney @hirojin I truly don't understand what's happening at the Oracle Java team with this 'Java 9, but only for six months then the name changes' deal

Like: changing the name of your product *seriously breaks things* for Enterprise. The install directory changes, for one. So all your 'is this product installed y/n' automatic detection scripts have to be rewritten. You can't just expect they'll work after a name change!

Why don't they call the first one '17.09'? Why '9' then '18.03'?

@craigmaloney @hirojin @natecull Yeah, I have NFC what they're on about. I'm sure there's a perfectly logical reason for it but I'll be damned if I know what that is.
