Achievement unlocked: loaded a GNOME link that was pasted in a chatroom and triggered @cadey's "Anubis" anti-LLM-scraper protection catgirl with my genuine Firefox browser, and had to watch my CPU burn for a minute :blobmiou:

I regret to inform you that we have now entered the DEFCON 1 stage of the struggle against the LLMs "AI" bubble 🫠

What I don't quite understand is why the GitLab instance would put up this challenge to already logged-in users 🤔

@nekohayo @cadey

That will seriously reduce my time spent on gitlab.

@nekohayo @cadey In a way I understand why this exists. But... Yeah no, I don't want my CPU to burn when I want to contribute to FLOSS projects...

@nekohayo @cadey if you didn't mention the "minute" it took, I'd think the thing just got stuck. I can see why one would introduce this thing, but it is way too damn obtrusive. Well, at least it seems to be a one-off thing... Hopefully.

@nekohayo wow holy shit this is awesome! I should get in touch with the GNOME team to see if they run into any issues with it.

@cadey Many of us have been having random encounters with Anubis today, I got my ass kicked by it on a couple of occasions in the past few hours, it feels exactly as terrifying as in Zone of the Enders: youtube.com/watch?v=CFmfygHQ4r

@nekohayo @cadey I was actually suggesting the same for freedesktop's gitlab instance. Though I'm curious about the check taking that long on systems. It took a second here.

@karolherbst Yeah that's partially because I fucked up the implementation of difficulty. I'm gonna make a patch to fix that, but I kinda wish that they used anything but Matrix. I've had to delete my Matrix account due to transphobic harassment.

@cadey well.. we are still using good ol IRC at least 🙃 and we do have a huge bot problem, sometimes we got 100k ore more sign-ups per week just for spam...

But we've also been seeing AI crawler hammering at our instance quite a lot.

So yeah, definitely interested to find good solutions for that.

@nekohayo @cadey

The protection doesn't trigger unconditionally?

I get the anti-LLM protection thingy every time that I open a link to that domain. It sometimes doesn't trigger for you?

@whynothugo @nekohayo I'm working on making it only trigger when you're not logged in. Sorry for the inconvenience! I made it fail closed.
