This is the largest theft in the United States. The NYT reports that: OpenAI built a tool to transcribe YouTube videos to train its LLMs. Greg Brockman personally helped scrape the videos. OpenAI knew it was a legal gray area. Microsoft is funding this project. nytimes.com/2024/04/06/technol

The New York Times · How Tech Giants Cut Corners to Harvest Data for A.I.By Cade Metz

@nixCraft IANAL but it seems like them using automatically generated derivatives, not the videos itself is legal

> YouTube [...] prohibits use of its **videos** for applications that are “independent” of the video platform. [...] Ultimately, an OpenAI team transcribed more than one million hours of YouTube videos, the people said.

Should we be rooting for one tech giant beating the other because they hoarded more data in their silo?

@nixCraft this whole AI story is an interesting phenomenon. Daron Acemoğlu and James A. Robinson point the laws protecting intellectual property on their works „Why Nation Fails: The Origin of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty“ as one of the key factors for the success of industrialized nations as the USA.

I wonder if this behavior will make people create less because at the end only big tech can make money out of intellectual property. We may be experiencing the downfall of capitalism right now.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social OpenAI's heist of the entire Internet might just cause "peak information" (as in peak oil)

@nixCraft I do not see the problem

Was any of the material they used not on the public internet?

It is available to read, see, watch, listen to, and learn from

The last thing we need is tighter IP laws, they will be to benefit the powerful over the weak

@worik @nixCraft yikes.

@nixCraft
Can you remind me what is the fine or the jail time for downloading a MP3?

I guess it could be used as a baseline to know what could be their sanction.

@nixCraft tech giants should go to war against each other and loose all their money in the process.
