In another news... Microsoft pulls Windows 11 24H2 from Insider Release Preview Channel Because of Recall Generating Nothing But Negative Press. Not a single person want this feature, I guess. Lmao. https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/10/microsoft_pulls_windows_24h2_11/ Who wants a fully surveillance-enabled computer that records everything you do, including your password, in an SQL database? This is a wet dream for three-letter agents and threat actors.
@nixCraft It looks like microsoft... recalled windows recall
@nixCraft who would have thought?
@nixCraft Big Tech style; they pull it FOR NOW. They will sneakily and gradually re-introduce it in 5 years.
Microsoft signed contracts with its Saudi investors precisely to deliver such surveillance functionality to despots desperate to retain power. And not just the Saudis.

Lots of employers want spyware on all the company (and sometimes employees' personal) systems.
The beatings will continue until productivity meets our quarterly goals, then reset just in time for the next quarter.
@nixCraft @trendytoots How has El Reg, of all publications, not come up with a witty “Recall of recall” title for this article?! #theRegister #Tech #Microsoft #Recall #journalism
@nixCraft Oh God, they're still pushing for it despite all the backlash! I mean, look at this quote! It's straight from the article:
"I don't have anything more to share beyond what's in the blog post and that we are working to get it rolling out again shortly." - Brandon LeBlanc
"we are working to get it rolling out again shortly."
Oh my good grief, why?! Why?! WHYYYYYYYYYY!?!?
@nixCraft
microsoft gets lot of bad publicity for this. but as a reminder, others are not so good either.
like google:

when is apple's turn. apple does have some kind of file storing feature for different versions, i think it is time machine.
Let's not conflate Apple's Time Machine feature with Microsoft's Recall or whatever Google's version of Recall is.
Time Machine is Apple's backup solution to protect against data loss in the event a user suffers a catastrophic data loss event or accidentally deletes a file. It makes incremental backups to an external hard drive or USB. Those backups are stored locally and can be encrypted. You can exclude files or directories that you don't want backed up. And it's disabled by default, so it's opt-in, and you can turn it on/off whenever.
The backups are not stored on any cloud service, Apple is not taking "screenshots" of your screen every few seconds or storing text/images in an SQL database, and they are not scanning your backups for any kind of analytics or data training for AI or other purposes.
I think most people would agree having a backup solution in place is a good idea for data recovery, whether they use Apple's built-in Time Machine or a third-party backup software/solution.
Apple built in Time Machine and made it easy to use because most computer users are non-technical and have no idea how to set up more complex backup solutions/software.
@dan @nixCraft
technically correct, but i don't trust apple.
apple collects data like other companies and totally controls their devices. apple already has co-processor in their m-chips, i think it is called neural engine. it can be used for a.i. analysis.
apple probably gets away from this and blames competitors for their bad practices.
@nixCraft Meanwhile clearing of 30 days old files from Recycle Bin is broken and just doesn't work for literal years now. I have 7 months old files in my Recycle Bin because it's just not working. It literally has one job. Reported it to Microsoft several times. They just plain don't give a shit. But Ai everything and Copilot this and Recall that. Total morons.
I used to be so excited about every major Windows release, now I hate using Windows 11 and worry what they'll make dumber next time...
@nixCraft don't think of it as a Big Bad Corporation getting their comeuppence
Think of it as a lot of software programmers getting paid
Trickle down lives, just in other forms
@nixCraft Good news!
@nixCraft don't they have new computers with custom cpu designed just for this? are they also being pulled
@nixCraft a wet dream for the the Data Protection and Privacy enforcement agencies.
As a contractor I don't get given client hardware for use at home so my personal device could hoover up a whole bunch of client data. The consequences of a breach of client devices would be bad, but now they have to add to that all the contractor endpoints into the risk calculus.
Fun!
@nixCraft I mean the recall was in the name, is anyone surprised?
@nixCraft it will come back. You can be sure about that. Even more that now Apple has announced a similar thing. Luckily, we have OpenRecall
@nixCraft well well well
