So George Santos is now saying he totally has answers to all the questions that have been raised about his fabricated background, which he’ll provide… next week. Which does not inspire a ton of confidence.

“Sir, can you establish that you are not, in fact, twelve squirrels in a trenchcoat?”
Oh, absolutely. It’ll just take me a few days to gather the nuts… I mean evidence!

Julian Sanchez

Imagine someone had some super basic questions about your background like “where did you go to college?” Or “does the nonprofit you claim to run exist?” Or “did you work for these large firms?” If it was super important to publicly establish you’d been honest, how long would it take you to produce evidence of those things? Because I’m thinking maybe one day tops.

Also the Times repeatedly asked for evidence of all this stuff before their story ran 4 days ago, so he’s presumably had a week at minimum already, and probably longer than that.

@normative I had to go through a minor nightmare trying to obtain my college transcript but even still, with all the complications, it took one business day.

@normative if it wasn’t complicated, it would have taken me like 1 hour via the online system.

@ejacqui @normative this is for sure a weird flex, but the fact that I was a college sophomore in 1988 is memorialized in the NYT. (Our local outbreak of the Scores virus on the Mac + I was the college stringer for a semester) nytimes.com/1988/11/06/us/nort

@normative if you really wanted to go hardcore, getting transcripts from a registrar's office during winter break sounds like it could take a week, but almost anything else in the list seems like 1 day?

@elfprince13 I mean, maybe, but I can also think of plenty or other ways I could establish where I went to college. Diploma’s in a closet somewhere. Lots of online evidence I was on the debate team. I could rattle off a few dozen names of students and faculty who’d recall me.

@elfprince13 I graduated 20 years ago, which is a lot longer than Santos, and it would take me maybe 15 minutes to round up a mountain of evidence that I went to that school even without contacting the registrar.

@normative sure, guess it depends what the standard of evidence is after you've lost control of the narrative to the extent that people are interrogating your life story like "but are you actually gay though".

@normative but yeah, you could just Google my name + school name and find press releases from the school, so I wouldn't have ended up in this situation to begin with

@elfprince13 @normative that part is really disturbing because I know plenty of gay folks who came out later in life and had lived a number of years as hetero, but most of them never hid that because it was part of who they are

@normative I think we should normalize taking time to respond to professional inquiries and so up to two days might be reasonable.

@normative Realistically will there be any consequences for this?
