"An appeals court has ruled that Idaho can enforce most of its anti-abortion travel ban, making it the 1st state in the nation to do so."

"It continues to baffle me that this is not front page news every single day. If legislators were trying to trap men in states where they couldn’t get healthcare, we would never hear the end of it."

Abortion, Every Day · Idaho Will Enforce Abortion Travel BanBy Jessica Valenti

@sewigget Do they have any budged set a side for the foster system to take in the unwanted infants? Social benefits and daycare for single parents with unwanted children? Therapeutic help for traumatised kids and teenagers forced to grow up in the resulting circumstances or the knowledge of not being wanted? The last one is easy. Just stick'em in the prison system, that will straighten them out.

@sewigget don't mean rub salt on your wound.

But it's funny for a country which fundamentally secular to enforce laws inspired by religious beliefs.

@sewigget I live one mile from Idaho, in Washington. Our hospital parking lot, which offers maternity care (and presumably abortion service), is filled with Idaho license plates. Our cannabis dispensary parking lot is likewise filled with Idaho shoppers. Our little town caters to most of Idaho's Bonner and Boundary counties who don't care to drive on to Spokane.

I assume Spokane, 50 minutes south of here, handles the same functions for Idaho's Kootenai, Shoshone, and Benewah counties. I assume Pullman and Clarkston Washington handle the remaining Idaho folks in the Pacific time zone.

Mountain time? You're on you're own. Ontario Oregon and Salt Lake, I suppose.

People near the border have always played fast/loose with state laws to get what they want. A bunch of fascist yahoos in Boise can write any law they like - good luck enforcing it.

@sewigget I wonder how many women of the red persuasion will have to die before they figure out that they voted wrongly...?

@sewigget IANAL but doesnʼt this violate the Interstate Commerce Clause?

@monkeyborg @sewigget “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.” - Republican lawmaker standard operating procedure.

@sewigget @hacks4pancakes Meanwhile, next-door neighbor Montana added abortion protections into the constitution, making them very difficult to displace.

Also, physicians are fleeing from states like Idaho. These states are very soon going to reach the “find out” phase of the FAFO process, as some types of healthcare become very difficult to access locally.

@sewigget They wanted to send it to the states because tyranny is easier to enforce on a smaller scale.

@sewigget This should make WW news...

@sewigget So they're gonna stop the lifeflights out of Idaho and just let women die, too?

@sewigget I fear that women will resort to violence to get out of an untenable situation. Explain to me what medical procedure do men lose their freedom to travel to a different state?

@sewigget

They can't know if a woman is pregnant or if they are traveling to get an abortion, so this amounts to a travel ban for women.

@sewigget
Bunch of LDS running the state...
This freaking religious stupidity needs to stop.
And just like every other terrorist organization , it needs to be stomped out.

@sewigget

Before I ask this question, let me state clearly that I am 100% pro-choice and not arguing that topic. (heading off some flame response I hope)

My question: Isn't it already a crime to transport a minor across state lines without the permission of their parent or guardian?

Honestly, I wouldn't give someone else's kid a ride home across town without first confirming with their parents let alone cross state lines.

@sewigget “Oh, you’re buying a plane ticket? Pee on this stick for me.”

@MattMerk @sewigget I don't know whether to laugh at or be horrified by this post.

@ThomDee Probably horrified. I just think of how they intend to enforce this law. It's a completely unconstitutional law, to be sure, and yet here we are.

Frankly, the prospect of all this makes me feel homicidal toward the fascist Christianists who are gleeful about what they are doing. @sewigget

@MattMerk @sewigget Please don't get me started. I don't even speak to my sisters because of their Evangelical Christian beliefs and their hate to sin love the sinner bs.

@ThomDee @sewigget I encourage you to get started! 😆 but something occurred to me yesterday. With the number of atheists rising and self-identified Christians falling, I’d say their future odds look worse and worse. It’s been my hypothesis for a long time that society has a pain threshold, and these religionists, with the help of their wealthy benefactors, are helping to reach it.

History tells us this ends very badly for such groups.

@MattMerk @sewigget You are definitely correct. Even in my work as a counselor I'm finding more and more people turning away from religion because they've been traumatized by it.

@sewigget if this travel ban is legal why wouldn't an anti-travel ban be legal. Can we make it illegal for anyone to prevent or punish in any way someone attempting to travel to Washington state?

@sewigget I mean this law is literally preventing someone wanting to do business in my state from doing so even though that business is legal here and federally.

@sewigget So free travel in the USA requires you to be male, or proof that you are not pregnant now?

@sewigget Holy hell. The US government officially hates pregnant women more than Muslims.
