Here's my new portable computer. The case was finally printed successfully so I was able to make sure all the electronics actually fit. The cables need a lot of wrangling so I might look for some shorter ones. The list of components is on my blog:

This was a fun custom deck to make. I'm happy to have a sturdy little computer with a mechanical keyboard that I can take with me.

@thegibson @thetrakynia Seconded. This actually looks small enough to bring on an airplane and be useful. Most **laptops** these days are now too big to fit in a typical commercial flight's lunch tray.

Thank you for sharing.

@vertigo @thegibson Thanks for looking! It has a pretty small footprint, yup. The battery and the keyboard's metal plate make it a bit heavy, but it's a lot lighter than a Compaq portable from the 80s! 😀

@thetrakynia what a beautiful contraption!

It's been on my list to build something just like this! thanks for the inspiration.

@thurloat Thank you very much!

Good luck with your own portable!

@thetrakynia this is sick. I just ordered a mechanical keyboard kit today cause I am ready to get on the ticket of having a computer built by myself as well.

@wakest Thank you!

I love mechanical keyboards, good luck with your project!

@thetrakynia ordered a 40% Gherkin kit. I am excited to start soldering it...

@wakest Damn, those are tiny. Have fun with the soldering!

@gudenau If anyone wants to print their own copy I'll polish up the 3D model and put it online.

@thetrakynia I'm good, I've got a laser cut case for my display. I'm not planning on using a keyboard with mine.

@thetrakynia oh, this is really neat, well done!

How long do you reckon the battery lasts?

@emptyfortress Thank you so much!

I'm not sure about the battery, but I think it should be similar to a netbook depending on what the Pi is doing and if the display is on.

@thetrakynia I had a quick look around and if my math is not completely off looks like you can get almost 10 hours out of a single charge, not bad at all!

Also apparently keyboard LEDs are a real power hog? I didn't expect that

@emptyfortress Thanks for checking! That seems to match up with my limited testing.

I should remember to turn the display off since I have a switch just for that.

@thetrakynia any good URL where to buy some keyboard like this one ? I'm a Dvorak keyboard user and struggle to find good keyboard here in France :(

@hyde_stevenson I bought mine from mechanicalkeyboards.com/ The shipping might be pricey for you though.

I hope you find what you need.

@thetrakynia This is super cool and inspiring! I hope it is useful to you :)

@cirku17 I've just been booting to the command line to learn C, Vim, and Linux. I also use w3m for web browsing.

@thetrakynia Nice. I've been thinking about making something similar. My problem is I never go anywhere to take such a thing.

@Jason_Dodd I get what you mean. I don't commute or take many trips either, my only justification for the project was that I don't like typing on membrane keyboards. :-P
