Who are the people who thought that Mark Zuckerberg was OK until now but today he's really crossed a line?

I'm seeing a lot of it and come on. It's been very clear who he is for a long, long time. They made a whole movie about it literally 15 years ago.

Side note: annoy your friends by always (well, this year) referring to the year 2010 as "15 years ago"

@tomw LOL, well said. Just like with Musk, there's little room for surprise.

@tomw So are you switching to an instance, which does not federate with meta?

@django My whole point is that nothing has particularly changed, so why would I now if I didn't before?

@tomw displacing native hawaiians and stealing their land and water? I sleep

You copy twitters community notes? Raweeehhhrrrrggghg

@tomw @neil for me, I’d not used my Insta account in ages and this reminded me to do something about it

@steve @tomw @neil me too, unused for ages, then poof, deleted as of last night

@tomw as the old saying goes: When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
Especially when they are fascists.

@tomw I am still on FB, but only for a few specific groups of people. I don't follow new people often, except from these groups.

I would love to leave completely, but there are people there I don't want to lose touch with.

@SteveClough

Then ask them for their email address or phone number.

@SteveClough I'm also in this position actually. The post isn't supposed to read as a purist "I left FB a decade ago" thing

@SteveClough @tomw

'I associate with mass murderers, but only for a few specific groups of people. I don't follow new mass murderers often, except from these groups.

I would love to leave mass murderer associating completely, but there are mass murderers I don't want to lose touch with.'

@tomw better to shoe up late than not at all.

@tomw tbh he was seen as an asshole not a racist and transphobic asshole like today…

@tomw They're disenfranchising users in order to steal power and/or promote nuclear with minimal social media pushback.
They need the power for AI and crypto a grift on an epic scale people will be hurt most of them will deserve it.

@tomw consider that one does not quit cigarettes or heroin on moral grounds alone.

@tomw for me it's not personal how CEOs of $multi-billion corps behave when they see the way the wind blows. I was angry about how Bill Gates made his $billions. Fully understand his motivations concerning how he's giving much of that away.

Money and power is as money and power does. You want to change that, you want to change the money-tax system. That's doable incrementally and bottom up starting with local authorities running localised economies. covcd.copsewood.net/

@copsewood If your website is going to bring down capitalism then you'll need to update it more frequently than a 5 year cycle

@tomw my purpose isn't to "bring down capitalism" but to nudge it to evolve into something much more user friendly. Yes, I'm aware the Coventry City of Culture 2021 isn't the best hook for my ideas on the best reference I currently have any more. Your response has given me motivation to give that site an edit to make it more current.

Interestingly Coventry LETS (one of the references there) has restarted after a 10 year gap as participants got too old. You can't keep a good idea down. The money-tax system we have is a human construct. Other options are demonstrably available. Real change needs a movement, not just an old guy with a vision for it or a few weirdos who play trading games using made up money of our own construction, issue and account, and home made goods. We need younger visionaries, activists, hackers, influencers, entrepreneurs and politicians than just yours truly to take grassroots-led social transformation forward fuller steam ahead.

@tomw It helped me fall asleep on a long-haul flight once. He isn't all bad. 😄

@tomw The reality is that at the time it was far more easier (and convenient) to make a threads "account" than to go to places like bluesky or Mastodon.

The issue is always about how 'convenient', how much content, how much of the 'influencers' (or family/friends) are in the app, and if your horse isn't in the race you ain't betting.

@tomw me: no way that movie was 15 years ago! Me two seconds later: yikes, I'm old.

@tomw Anyone who gets his start by stealing images of women so men can discuss how fuckable they are is not going to turn out to be a good person.

That's basic.
