“Deepseek could be an extinction-level event for some venture capital firms,"

@SecurityWriter @GossiTheDog
The irony is that DeepSeek actually launched their model the day before the Stargate Project silliness. The latter just got all the attention in the press, so it took the markets a week to realise what had happened.

@GossiTheDog should have could have done open source - now billions of over spend on hardware- on the other hand the test time compute will be easier

@losttourist @GossiTheDog He's well known in Holland as well, and ultimately very popular as a social media avatar for the perpetually angry boomer demographic

@GossiTheDog One can hope. The whole American capitalist system is broken af at this point.

@GossiTheDog well, it's really a "oh-no" because the ones who will pay the biggest price (in terms of lives impacted and overturned by ruthless layoffs) will be, as always, innocent casualties who had nothing or very little to do with the bubble

@GossiTheDog I feel like, my sentiment is more like this. Or at least that is the best one I can find for the sheer morbid glee and hope I feel at this possibility.

It's far from good news. But it still feels like improvement.

@GossiTheDog don't threat me with a good time.

@alicemcalicepants @GossiTheDog I could have told them this when I can run machine learning models on my Raspberry Pi that cost £25 and uses 5 watts of electricity at most.

@GossiTheDog I really think the creators of this Chinese (not)AI deserve a medal of distinction, recognising there sterling effort in fucking up the US (not)AI grift

@GossiTheDog @alicemcalicepants there is no joy like "schadenfreude".

But tbh, that bubble had it coming and I'm glad I got to witness it. Maybe the techbros finally can get some fresh air and touch some grass now that their heads can be pulled from Jen-Hsun "Jensen" Huang's [insert body part here].

@DoomBananas @GossiTheDog @alicemcalicepants there is no bubble bursting yet.

This is just noise and it’s sad to see so many very smart people fall for the same news headlines they mock in other areas, it’s the classic engineer problem of thinking you know everything because you have deep knowledge in one subject.

There is absolutely a disruption risk, likely a bubble, but it’s going to take more than an efficient genAI model and everyone falling over themselves in order to burst it.

@dotsie @GossiTheDog @alicemcalicepants I can kinda see where you are going with this and I'll admit that calling the bubble burst is a tad premature (there is more popping to do) However calling a drop of $US593 billion a disruption risk is maybe under playing it?

No clue if Deepseek can deliver on it's promises or if the models are as good as advertised. But Nvidia needs some competition in this area. It's not healthy for anyone if they can dictate the hw used.

@DoomBananas @GossiTheDog @alicemcalicepants I agree, the disruption risk I was referring to is a hypothetical novel approach that either greatly reduces the cost, relies on novel or different technology, etc.

There will be computer science advances and we won’t be brute forcing matrix math forever at the same trajectory for the same reasons.

The market was impacted this week but a lot of it is just the media driving down prices to extract more wealth, we likely have a few more years ahead.

@GossiTheDog

I'm not sure the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" paradigm is a good approach on this one.

@skarnol @GossiTheDog they lost billions that they can’t funnel into fucking up anyones government. Less money at the top is always good for everyone who isn’t at the top.

@passwordsarehard4 @skarnol @GossiTheDog
> Less money at the top is always good for everyone who isn’t at the top.

such a good way to put it i deliberately switched to my alt just to reply to that effect

@skarnol @GossiTheDog

But pointing them at each other for mutual destruction is a good plan.

@GossiTheDog Better not forget that it still is coming from a state-capitalist country.

@DziadekMick @GossiTheDog Haha! Of course this had to be mentioned, since it is not clear for most of us. Point was that all capitalism is bad, not that China is somehow worse than the US or vice versa. TBH, I do not hold either country for a good example in much anything these days.

@paavi @GossiTheDog So true. At least America doesn't ban books, threaten journalists, rewrite history, protect disinformation, and control access to education and science.

@lywyn Congratulations on totally missing the point and bringing in a false dichotomy. In other words: that was not the point nor within the scope of my comment. We probably maybe agree on most topics related to the USA. I was refering to China, if that was not obvious from the context. Yes, I am fun at parties. 😉 @GossiTheDog

@lywyn Both PRC and USA are all sorts of bad in different ways. Now a rhetorical question: Do you feel like I failed to list some other country and/or state that is potentially horrible in some way? @GossiTheDog

@lywyn @paavi @GossiTheDog

"At least America doesn't ban books, threaten journalists, rewrite history, protect disinformation, and control access to education and science."

Umm, the US does all of that. Have you been asleep for 30 years?

@troy_frizzell My thought was that maybe they meant to write something sarcastic. @lywyn @GossiTheDog

@paavi @lywyn @GossiTheDog

Ah, well, yes, I can see how that would be.

I will admit, I've missed jokes in the past. I could absolutely be missing this one.

@troy_frizzell That's also why people should sustain from trying sarcasm in written form without highlighting it in a way or another. @lywyn @GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog too much of this industry is built over throwing hardware at the problem with too much easy cash. Time for the fat cats to feel some pain

@GossiTheDog If only it could also be an extinction level event for Clarkson’s career.

@GossiTheDog
I wouldn't be surprised if they get bailed out

@GossiTheDog don't threaten me with a good time 😈

@GossiTheDog nope. The
Is hand wringing is completely unjustified

@GossiTheDog I love that a picture of right-winger twit Jeremy Clarkson is at this point mostly used to shit on right-wingers 😂

@GossiTheDog Strange: My "pity generator" seems to be defunct 😄

But I've got some spare thoughts and prayers I could send them...

@GossiTheDog I need the source for this so I can print it

@GossiTheDog
OH yeahhhhhhh just seeing them nervous gives me pleasure. All I need now is a snow storm of investors and CEOs jumping out of windows.

@GossiTheDog Which ironically, shouldn't be that big of a deal for them. EXCEPT: they thought their investments were the only possible one's that could do AI and so did the companies actually building the crazy things.

Google isn't the only search engine, Outlook's not the only email client, and Windows isn't the only operating system. Why would they expect ChatGPT (or Gemini or whatever) to be the only "real" game in town? Also PLOT TWIST, it's not the answer to everything anyway.

@GossiTheDog The house always wins - that is rule #1 of gambling.
