Not going to lie: leaning out of the window of a moving steam train, desperately clutching a Leica so I don't drop it, and hoping I've got the zone-focusing and exposure right to make this shot work was a whole lot of fun.
(#Leica Ic, Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5, Rollei Retro 400S in LC29)
@coldkennels success! I like seeing the reflection in the trains window too
@analog_cafe thanks, mate. It came out way better than I could have hoped; I was already a few pints deep at this point, if I’m honest.
@coldkennels very cool shot Tony, thanks for sharing!
@coldkennels Great image, worth the effort!
Watch for the smut in your eye.
@poloduibhir I legitimately swallowed a chunk of coal that was thrown back from the engine at one point.
It was delicious.
@coldkennels How does it feel to have inspired the updated safety warning, "Please keep your arms and Leicas inside the train at all times"?
Great shot!
@kboyd “…but if you’re using a Canon, feel free to wave that thing outside the window as much as you want.”
@coldkennels As one does. https://www.flickr.com/photos/beryllium/48710458802 (We don't have many trains here, so I don't get very many chances to lose limbs)
@kboyd Oh, that is a particularly beautiful bit of scenery to be hanging out of a train in!
The only times I've visited BC I was going to an event in Cloverdale. I definitely got the short end of the stick looking at this shot - what a lovely part of the world.
@coldkennels Fantastic photo! Also glad you weren’t decapitated.
@coldkennels Lovely shot. Glad you didn't do a Vyvyan.
@coldkennels I shot with my OM-1 by setting up for distance then only photographing subjects in that range. Parades were a good place to photograph, mainly the crowd. Fun
@coldkennels and what was the steam engine?
@orc Good question! I didn't think to take notes, but here's the "roster" at the railway in question:
Bulleid Pacific No. 34072 '257 Squadron'
BR Standard 4MT No. 80078
Caledonian Railway 812 No. 828
Class 31/4 31430 'Sister Dora'
Class 33/0 33063 'R. J. Mitchell'
It might have been the Calendonian 828; I have some close-up shots of that engine later in the roll.
@coldkennels It is hard to tell from back in the train; British locomotives are so nice and compact that from an angle like yours all you can tell is there's something emitting smoke from in front of the tender :-)
@orc true - but some of them are CHONKERS. If I remember I’ll post an engine shot or two as an example tomorrow!
@coldkennels
What, no wrist strap?!
@RealGene I did have a short neck strap wound around my wrist… but there was still that not-entirely-irrational fear of my viewfinder dropping off, or the Sonnar dropping out of the Amedeo adapter, or the strap lugs breaking…
@coldkennels
Nice! Where was this?
@Voline in Kent, about an hour southwest of London, UK. Real nice local heritage railway, and they were holding a beer festival ON THE TRAINS. It was glorious!
@coldkennels the light is lovely
@Robo thanks. Might be the last day of good light in England for a while if the weather forecast is anything to go by!
@coldkennels incredible photo!!!
@basil I was thinking of EXACTLY that image while I was on the train! I imagine it’s burned into the mind of every Brit of a certain age.
@coldkennels yes I think you're right for sure.
