German news website @heiseonline has been very active on the #fediverse, now the second largest news account. Editor @mho has extensively documented the process.
Findings compared to their (6x sized) Twitter account:
Way higher engagement than Twitter
Website traffic slightly below Twitter
Valuable information for any news organisation that is debating whether to leave Twitter, and which platform to join instead!

@fediversereport I am curious, what all posts got the extra boosts on the fediverse? Is that data available anywhere?
@Zach777 try @trendingtoots for starters.
(Cc @fediversereport)
@jdasher That account seems to have no posts even on the original page.
@Zach777 huh. You’re right, it doesn’t.
I’m convinced that I see a “trending toots” thing pretty regularly. I’ll keep an eye out, and if I’m not just imagining things, I’ll reply again with something useful.

@heiseonline @mho
Bist Du jetzt eher Legolas oder mho
Oder beides geschäftlich und privat?
@fediversereport @Mediapart has 50k+ followers as well!
@renchap @Mediapart Ah I actually did not realise, thanks!
@fediversereport @heiseonline @mho @fediversenews @spreadmastodon
Sure. They re-share their own articles. This way it's easy seeming quite active.
@rc@tchncs.de @fediversereport
Hmm..
@heiseonline posts about 50 New articles every day and re-shares no more than 3 to 4 of them.
This is quite active, isn't it?
@mho @fediversereport
I counted 13 reposts of Heise posts since friday. On weekdays may be more.
Please stop reposts of your own stuff (Auto, Fotografie, Security, c't...). If I want to read that, I'll follow those accounts. Now I have most of that two times in my timeline. That's annoying.
The account shares all the articles, that are published on heise.de (im "Ticker"). Some articles there com from our Channel (heisec etc.) just like on #Mastodon. If you don't want to see this content, you could mute the channel.
But they are not "re-shares" because, they are only posted once by @heiseonline (as boosts and not direct posts).
@mho @fediversereport @heiseonline
OK, but shown as "heise online teilte".
@rc @fediversereport @heiseonline
Sure, but I would call that "sharing", not "re-sharing". "Re-sharing" would be boosting ones own posts..
@fediversereport @heiseonline @mho @fediversenews @spreadmastodon While it’s very nice that they appreciate Mastodon, let’s not forget about their “cookie wall” style cookie banners, that only let you opt out if you pay for their subscription. This is a policy that does not fit the #privacy ideals of the Mastodon community.
@preya @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon Well, there is a "Pur-Abo" without Tracking:
https://www.heise.de/pur/info-faq/
@mho @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon I know. still: “Pay Money or get tracked” didn’t align with the values of the Fediverse very well. I know recently you added advanced options to prohibit specific 3rd party cookies. Still, no decline button on the top level is a very shady dark pattern.
@preya @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon Datenschutzkonferenz erklärt "Pur-Abo-Modelle" grundsätzlich für zulässig
Das Nachverfolgen von Nutzerverhalten kann prinzipiell auf eine Einwilligung gestützt werden, wenn alternativ ein trackingfreies Bezahlmodell verfügbar ist.
@mho @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon I’m aware of this document, yet it’s not legally binding, still waiting for actual verdicts on this. Also, just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s ethical or nice.
@fediversereport sehr passend zur Diskussion in der letzten @freakshow - schon gesehen, @rstockm?
