i have some *feelings* about this as a reluctant and constantly burnt out FOSS maintainer; looking forward to reading this over the weekend https://motherboard.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/43zak3/the-internet-was-built-on-the-free-labor-of-open-source-developers-is-that-sustainable
@brion The traditional Unix security model was created in times when there was one computer and many terminals connected to it. It was designed to protect software from users. Today we rather need to protect users from software 😀

overengineered home networking
inspired by a recent @legind gram and an internet outage at home, i got carried away and spent a bit of time this week rigging up a fallback internet connection with an LTE modem, a calyx sprint SIM, and the pfsense box i've been using as a router. (the primary connection is fiber.)
i have no idea why i get carried away and do these things, there is almost literally no point to this?
@wilw That said, plenty of other instances do a fair job w/ security. The tools Gargron maintains & shares just won't tell you much about them. I was here for months before I found the corner of the Fediverse w/ meaningful standards.
Instances.noct.zone is a list of places that listen to marginalized ppl when making & enforcing rules, and its curator helps maintain an extensive blocklist many ppl share as well.
A friend of mine sent me this. I know it's at Twitter, and I know it may be unwelcome here, but more information is best, when it comes to making decisions and choices.
(tl;dr: Mastodon may not be the best choice for you, especially if you're a vulnerable or marginalized person).
It turns out "draw me a picture of whatever I ask for" is a really hard task for an algorithm. This one will try its best though: http://t2i.cvalenzuelab.com/
