"The promise of VR is to make the world you wanted. It is not possible, on Earth, to give everyone all that they would want. Not everyone can have Richard Branson’s private island,” Doom co-creator and former CTO of Oculus John Carmack told Joe Rogan during a 2020 interview.
Fuck this take, and the "let them e̶a̶t̶ ̶c̶a̶k̶e̶ play VR" insult
"Please, we just want housing and healthcare we could easily afford if you billionaires didn't horde."
"Look, we can't give everyone a private island, so we should just keep everything for ourselves."

It's been more than a year since @twitter announced "Project Blue Sky," a bid to redesign social media around open protocols, not walled gardens. That's our kind of social media - now, will they do it?

I wrote about using browsers without tabs, and the relationship between convenience, scale, and alienation: https://clarity.flowers/blog/convenience.html
A fascinating idea. Viewing your browser tabs as part of the filesystem, allowing you to use standard Unix filesystem tools to view and manipulate the tab contents. The Unix "everything is a file" concept is still a powerful one.

This set of explorations of colonialist value systems in games (both emergent and intentional) is resonating with me today:

I’m thinking about how much of this comes from cultural context, and how much comes from the the nature of traditionally non-networked video games where the player will necessarily have superior agency to any other (AI) actor.
Any good examples of games with mechanics that value the dignity of other actors, and that encourage collaboration?
