Europe’s open-access drive escalates as university stand-offs spread #openaccess https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-05191-0?error=cookies_not_supported&code=b65e4f31-c11f-4d7c-809a-72ac15402190
Every Wednesday I publish a newsletter about digital rights - here's today's edition https://connectedrights.net/2018/08/22/are-online-platforms-tools-or-privatised-law-enforcement/
New blog post from me - "Stop your eye rolling over there. This Jeremy Corbyn Brexit interview is important."
I just remembered how in my first few months as a tech journalist I found myself interviewing Chuck D and got to quote him as saying digital rights management is "just a lot of fucked-up shit" https://www.zdnet.com/article/chuck-d-lays-down-the-law-on-drm/

the federated TL is just too speedy, my friends
French state seems to be opening its own instance on Mastodon. https://amicale.net/users/DINSIC/updates/148
What happens to our profiles, people followed and posts if a #Mastodon Instance dies?
We've seen this happen earlier when an Instance lost its data and there were no backups. I think the backup issue is being handled by most #Admins now.
But say an Admin dies expectantly and they are a sole Admin of their Instance? Where does this leave others?
Maybe there should be some "buddy system" in place between Admins? Other ideas?
Hi all Mastodons and other free social network users,
unfortunately there was a misunderstanding and this is the last post of fsfe@social.tchncs.de
The account will be deleted over the weekend.
But, of course, we will keep staying in the free. Please follow us here:

About risk profile:
- Mastodon is like email because you can't delete federated toots
- Mastodon is like twitter in that Google's search bots index it, unless your admins robot.txt it away
- Mastodon is like being a teenager because the people that own your instance can see all your private stuff
Have a talk with your admin about their policies.
By default, assume everyone will be able to read your toots forever.
