NotASnark<p>A couple of seasons skip by in our Ars Magica campaign. Companions are sent out to follow up on leads that were picked up in the previous adventure, whilst the magi settle down to spending the last half of the year curled up with their books.</p><p>The end of the year sees more Earthquakes strike Scotland, as well as revolts and righteous priests.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TTRPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TTRPG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArsMagica" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArsMagica</span></a> <br /><a href="https://blog.notasnark.net/2025/02/1234-autumn.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.notasnark.net/2025/02/123</span><span class="invisible">4-autumn.html</span></a></p>

NotASnark<p>The magi in our Ars Magica campaign are celebrated by the villagers for finding the magic cup that will stop their village from burning down.</p><p>We probably have stopped the fires, but by dealing with the local arsonists not by finding a cup.</p><p>Our grog then decides to hire the arsonists to distract them from causing random burnings, and to put them to a use better suited for us.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TTRPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TTRPG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArsMagica" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArsMagica</span></a><br /><a href="https://blog.notasnark.net/2025/01/1235-summer-3.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.notasnark.net/2025/01/123</span><span class="invisible">5-summer-3.html</span></a></p>
NotASnark<p>In our Ars Magica campaign, we hand things over to one of our grog to do the investigation. He turns out to be quite competent.</p><p>Investigating strange fires in the village of Crawick, we have found the arsonists responsible. But who is paying them, and more importantly, why? Scrying their location is a possibility, but if they are a magus of the Order of Hermes then we&#39;ll be breaking the Code of Hermes.<br /><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TTRPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TTRPG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArsMagica" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArsMagica</span></a><br /><a href="https://blog.notasnark.net/2025/01/1235-summer-2.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.notasnark.net/2025/01/123</span><span class="invisible">5-summer-2.html</span></a></p>

I've since had fun with other games with freeform magic/miracles (e.g <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/MageTheAscension" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MageTheAscension</span></a>, <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Nobilis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nobilis</span></a>) but Ars Magica was first I'd seen.</p>
NotASnark<p>It is Summer 1235 in our Ars Magica campaign, and time for all the magi to head out on an adventure together. NotASnark<p>Where would a game of Ars Magica be without a discussion of the finer points of history? Such as does the year begin in spring or winter? Or does it even begin on the 1st of January?</p><p>There is also an exploration of strange gates to Faerie, and the obtaining of a new plaything for my companion&#39;s children.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TTRPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TTRPG</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArsMagica" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArsMagica</span></a> <br /><a href="https://blog.notasnark.net/2024/12/1234-spring.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.notasnark.net/2024/12/123</span><span class="invisible">4-spring.html</span></a></p>

Listening to 2024.10.21 episode of Hidden Brain - Emotions 2.0 : When I Feel What You Feel and the latter part covers rituals. I'm very much reminded of <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Glorantha" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Glorantha</span></a> and <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/runequest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>runequest</span></a> and the aspect of everyone is magical and contribute to heroquest or other rituals. <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/arsmagica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>arsmagica</span></a> and <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/mage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mage</span></a> and many others include ritual magic casting. The author Ted Gioia - coming from music history - also covers similar ground and I think I'll have to start up some notetaking for game homebrews.</p>

John Nephew<p>For <a href="https://bsky.brid.gy/hashtag/ArsMagica" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ArsMagica</a> fantasy, I love the idea of Ethiopian emissaries traveling to all corners of Mythic Europe. And of course one of them would be a fantastic companion or magus for a Covenant. Perhaps a visiting scholar, trading ancient Solomonic magical secrets for the wisdom of the Order of Hermes.</p>

John Nephew<p>How do I know that <a href="https://bsky.brid.gy/hashtag/ArsMagica" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ArsMagica</a> is a very international game? Well, for the just-finished <a href="https://bsky.brid.gy/hashtag/crowdfunding" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#crowdfunding</a> campaign, it appears that more than 46% of our backers are outside the United States. I think for a US-based <a href="https://bsky.brid.gy/hashtag/TTRPG" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#TTRPG</a> <a href="https://bsky.brid.gy/hashtag/kickstarter" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#kickstarter</a> or the like, that's a pretty incredible number.</p>
