I'm sad to see (hear) the end of Canadaland's Détours. Emilie Nicolas is one of my favourite Canadian political commentators and I hope to be able to listen to her in some other format in the future. (Aside from her appearances as a panelist on CBC Power & Politics which I enjoy; she's a nice antidote to the cynical Ottawa insiders.) Another of the "only reasons to still subscribe to Canadaland" falls away🤔

Depends how long ago the recommendation was made.

He's pretty much lost all of his progressive staff, but at one point #Canadaland actually produced some solid reportage. There was a serial about the anti-Indigenous racism in Thunder Bay — which won awards if I remember correctly.

But then, Jesse decided to throw it all away, and this is apparently where he's landed.

It used to be that they did media criticism. I cannot imagine that this episode involves anything but softballs because she is the thinnest-skinned being on the face of the Earth, and there is no way in hell criticism was on the table if she was going to show up.

He even had to remove links to less than flattering content about her in favour of puff pieces.
She wouldn't share it until he did. 😄

That's how fucking thin her skin is!

No longer included, but a really good round up of her EARLY harassing behaviour in the wake of the Chris Sky shitshow.

This is an infuriating interview. I have a lot of (dwindling...?) respect for Jesse Brown and echo his concerns about rising antisemitism, however I understand the basic fact that "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" in no way procludes the simultaneous freedom of Jewish people in the same territory.

Dismissing the whole Pro-Palestinian movement because there are real instances of antisemitism at decentralised protests gets us no closer to peace because the systems of racism will be reflected in individuals in movements until racism is extinguished. The movement itself, its concerns and demands are not antisemitic. The racism is real though and must be dealt with, as too must we deal with the genocide and the occupation.

In this sorry excuse of an interview, Jesse doesnt even refer to the occuparion as such. Jesse also fails to push back when the Ambassador is flippant and dismissive about Isreal being labaled "colonialist," but Isreal is committing textbook settler colonialism (which surely Jesse knows) and that is the root of the problem.

Karyn Pugliese seems to have left #Canadaland as the editor-in-chief😐 it turned from her being on leave to her name being taken off the site to her retweeting someone who drew attention to it.

Honestly her being at the org was one of the few things that made me feel like maybe it was somehow on track to being better. They still have some good staff but it's gone on a sad trajectory from interesting indie media company to mistreating staff to whatever it is now.

I heard Mattea Roach is leaving #Canadaland too to have a show on CBC. I knew about the CBC thing, but not about the departure till someone posted about it on reddit today.

It's normal that more resourced news orgs are poaching the better Canadaland staff - that has been going on for a while and nothing new. But certainly many of the people I like continue to leave the org.

We (like Americans) also have modern slavery in the form of prison labour.
Recently, #Canadaland did a 3-part mini-series on prison labour as a part of their larger series on labour in general. This form of modern slavery takes advantage of BIPOC bodies.

If we want to abolish slavery, the work is not done yet.

Yesss!!! Enfin des journalistes qui sont capables d'être auto-critique sur leur manière de parler de la crise climatique. 🤩 Il est temps qu'on parle des solutions au lieu de juste répéter ce que les élus et les lobbyistes des énergies fossiles disent! 🤬
