In this week's episode Robert went to visit Narara Eco Village at the edge of Strickland State Forest, New South Wales.
The village is home to 138 adults and children and is attempting to create a truly sustainable and resilient community through a high degree of self-sufficiency in areas like energy, food, and water. The aim is for homes to be built with a significantly reduced impact on the environment when compared to the “average” house currently built in NSW.
Join Robert as he speaks to Jon Ellis, Head of NEV Power which operates the village's microgrid and community battery.

I'm still AGAINSTt nuclear power as an energy solution, because it's so very expensive. Where durable energy is so affordable.
But at least the waste problem seems to be solved.

"The Big Lie About Nuclear Waste" [13:03 min]

What if we could actually USE nuclear waste?
Nuclear waste is scary. Maybe you’ve seen it as glowing green goop in The Simpsons, or as a radioactive threat on the news. Either way, you likely know it has been a major block to the use and improvement of nuclear power. Over the last few decades, experts, politicians and the public have had heated debates over what to do with this radioactive material created by nuclear power plants.
But what if there were a way to not just store nuclear waste, but actually USE it?
This video is about the effort to make electricity out of nuclear waste. Really. It turns out, we developed the tools to do this decades ago. This story is about a technology we left behind and the people who want to bring it back.
For this video, I had the privilege of visiting one of the largest and oldest research centers in the US, the Argonne National Laboratory. I’m incredibly grateful to the researchers and staff I met there, and for their time in showing me their work. I also had the opportunity to speak with representatives from Oklo, a company working on new forms of nuclear power, including recycling nuclear waste as fuel. One of the best parts of making Huge If True is meeting and learning from people pushing what we can do in the hopes of improving the world for everyone else.

Time stamps:
00:00 Nuclear waste isn’t what I thought
02:21 How I got obsessed
03:27 How much energy is in nuclear waste?
06:20 How do you get electricity?
06:50 What is uranium?
07:28 How does a nuclear reaction work?
08:05 Why is nuclear waste dangerous?
08:40 What do we do with nuclear waste?
09:35 How do you make electricity from nuclear waste?
11:21 Why doesn’t the US reuse nuclear fuel?
12:20 Is recycling waste feasible?
13:41 What is Huge If True?

Correction:
07:09 The number refers to the total number of nucleons (either a proton or a neutron) in the atom, not the neutrons alone. A U-235 atom contains 92 protons and 143 neutrons (an atomic mass of 235). The U-238 atom also has 92 protons but has 146 neutrons (an atomic mass of 238). I should have said these differ by the number of neutrons in the atom. Thanks to the commenters who pointed this out!"

It's a trick !!
The carlobby trying to put cycling opposit public transport. So while 'we' quarral amongst eachother about the limited funds, nobody will notice the unlimited funds allocated to the car infrastructure. Which is much more expensive and benefits fewer people.
Guys... it's not a contest. Present the public with enough safe ALTERNATIVES and there will be less cars polluting the streets.

One of the most common arguments against building dedicated bike infrastructure is that we should instead be focusing on improving public transit. This argument sometimes comes from people opportunistically using transit as a cudgel but there’s also a kind of old-school city dweller that fundamentally understands transit in a way that they don’t for this new-fangled bike stuff. It’s worth remembering: in many cities, separated bike lanes are a relatively new idea. Just over a decade ago, Toronto was “considering” building some."

Why haven’t we covered them in solar panels?
In 2021, President Biden set an ambitious climate goal for the US to reach net-zero carbon emissions economy-wide by 2050. And as part of the transition to renewable energy, the country has drastically ramped up production of solar over the past few years. But that’s led to a new problem: finding enough land on which to put solar panels.
The easiest and cheapest places to install solar panels are often large, undeveloped plots of land. It's why, in many places across the country, we've seen rural areas — including fragile desert ecosystems and valuable farmland — turned into solar farms. Many local residents and conservationists have protested these rural solar projects for a variety of reasons: Some want to keep natural views, others want to retain space for agriculture or aim to preserve biodiversity. Solar will likely play an important role in the country’s move away from fossil fuels — but is there a smarter way to do it that doesn’t require taking up so much rural land?
In the video above, we explore one option that could help: parking lots. Solar photovoltaics researcher and professor Joshua Pearce goes into the data on how placing solar canopies over parking lots could be a worthwhile investment for many cities. And as more countries, like France, are moving toward retrofitting parking spaces with solar, we look at what it could mean in the US."

"It's time to replace urban delivery vans" [6:19 min]

E-bikes are cleaner, and safer. So why aren’t we using them?
Remember during lockdown, how we all got obsessed with ordering everything online and having it delivered right to our doorsteps? Yeah, turns out that isn’t going away anytime soon, and we’re starting to understand the many downsides. The delivery vans that make our next-day shipping dreams come true are driving up C02 emissions while making our streets more crowded and less safe.
Fortunately, there’s a hero waiting in the wings: the e-cargo bike. Not only can these bad boys deliver packages in urban environments just as quickly (and sometimes faster) than delivery vans, they take up far less space and are much less likely to cause pedestrian deaths. Companies like Amazon, DHL, and UPS are using them in several European cities, but American cities haven’t followed suit.
In this video, we explore why that is, and lay out some of the big steps American cities would need to take to join the e-bike delivery revolution."

A new study has identified plastic-eating fungi capable of breaking down polyurethane (PU) and polyethylene (PE). Researchers in Germany found that Fusarium, Penicillium, Botryotinia, and Trichoderma strains can metabolize plastic, potentially offering a tool for bioremediation.

Co-author Hans-Peter Grossart stresses that while fungi could help, reducing plastic pollution remains essential. Read more: climatesolutions.news/technolo

@OregonLive It's very expensive, but the least impactful action for this expansion should be through undergrounding. Something that isn't mentioned here is the threat from winter storm damages such as ice to these facilities, like we saw in early 2024 that led to a presidential disaster declaration.

More and more extreme climactic events are making overhead electrical infrastructure prohibitively expensive to build and maintain. From what I've seen within disaster recovery across Western States during the last 10 years, undergrounding is the future of resilient power systems. Undergounding also means no, or very few trees need to be cut.
