I know, that this maybe a tough one to swallow for some leftists. Especially the ones, who thinks that west is their primary target and all means, are justified in this fight. Between Ukraine & Russia – they are not equal actors. Russia is a right-wing fascist tyranny. Ukraine may have its problems, but it is liberal democracy. Ukraine’s victory will make situation better for a lot of people, including leftists, anarchists, LGBT+ even some Marxists (got arrested as well now, haven’t you heard about Kagarlitsky, Udaltsov? Members of Marxist research group “ROT Ufa”?) inside Russia as well. Russian victory will only leads to another war, and to spreading tyranny across the land of eastern Europe.
First thing, that you need to know – Modern Russia is not USSR. Modern Russia is a right-wing fascist state. Putin literally declares it in his regular “traditional values” speeches. Russia is not fighting against western Imperialism - It is competing with it as another imperialist. Modern Russia is a country where only the richest means something. Being rich in Russia means being a relative of some oligarch, state official etc. Biggest companies in Russia belong to state officials (if they are close to Putin and don’t care at all about laws), or by members of their families. If some liberal capitalist, without blood connections with regimes VIP-s dares to create some new company in Russia – it will be taken from him 100% by state officials and their monopolies. However, no one dares a couple of years, even little projects like online learning courses were taken away- by the way, original creators are often killed. That is the reason why Modern Russia is a classical in Marxist sense imperialistic country (financial capital+ monopolies+state = almost one entity) – the only way for it to sustain profits for monopolies –is to conquer factories and resources from other countries. Soft power of Russia is right-wing bigotry is almost unusable for foreign investments – so only military means are left.
In terms of the proletariat situation -it is absolutely awful. The labor market in Russia is Caribbean sea in 17 century. Fraud is everywhere, no unions, no ways to protect even basics rights, and most terrible practices – sending unemployed to the frontline, and if they refuse – no unemployment checks for you. Slavery for the poor (literally like in ancient world in Dagestan? And everyone knows about it, and no one is doing anything!), and some little things as no proper money, no safety etc
Migration. The state has created a situation, where it is easy to enter Russia, even to get a Russian passport. But, migrants are often sent to the frontlines. Police is doing raids on them, and then just throwing them into the frontline literally from their beds.
Chauvinism – Russia is a right-wing tyranny. Propaganda there is literally a death cult. 30% of the people, especially the elderly and kids are Johnstown lunatics. Combining with lots of migrants it is creating almost constant conflict – killings, fights, anti-Semitic pogroms it is all normal there.
Politics – no self- government what so ever. Any deputy who tries to do anything for his voters will be arrested or labeled foreign agent (and that means – no election) immediately. All discussions about politics could easy lead to a jail, because there is entire group of companies( all connected to secret police (FSB) or department “E”- extremism of police) who is specialized in snitching. Since there is no political representation at all – your rights are nonexistent. Your property could be taken from you by police force on a whim of any official at any time. And it happens everywhere – occupied Ukraine, Moscow, Siberia etc.
Tortures as a norm. Most brutal things – such as male rape culture in Russian prisons or police stations are being exploited by the state on almost an official level. People get tortured and raped and then their relatives blackmailed by videos of these atrocities. Because of war and mass using of convicts this culture is spreading in the army as well. Russia is a perfect example of a simple truth – LGBTQ rights is very important to everyone, including cisgender people, Because without LGBTQ rights – your own dignity will be in danger always, when you just touch law enforcement system or military.
Russia needs to change dramatically, needs to change for its own good, for the good of its own people. And maybe military lose may provoke some of those so necessary changes. And when you read about another person, who got killed in police station for 3 pro-peace videos on youtube (Pavel #Kushnir), whose relatives were so scared by the state, that they even didn’t even perform a proper examination of the body – you know, that it doesn’t matter, whether Russia will turn into several states or not. Because this brutal inhumane fascist tyranny must fall it is in everyone interest
