"Happy New Year’s Eve! It’s already 2023 in the Republic of Kiribati, which is one of the first places on Earth to celebrate the new year. The thirty-two atolls that make up the country are stretched between the Coordinated Universal Time +12, +13, and +14 time zones. In 1939, the S.S. North Haven, operated by Pan American Airways, arrived on Canton Island, part of the Republic of Kiribati, to construct an airbase for Pan American, and by 1940, it was ready for operation. Pan American used Canton Island as a stop on its routes from California to Fiji and Auckland, New Zealand. Do you have anything fun planned this evening to ring in the new year?" "Born #onthisday in 1906, Beverly Hills designer Don Loper (1906–1972) added airline stewardesses to the long list of stars wearing Don Loper originals. This Pan American World Airways wool suit from 1959 in Tunis Blue creates a fresh look with sharp, angular features exclaiming the aerodynamic mood of the exciting new jet age. The fitted jacket’s hourglass shape is emphasized by the slant of the triangular faux pocket flap, swept-back cuff, and partial peaked collar boldly traced by the blouse. A matching pencil skirt with a deep kick pleat completes the silhouette, while the hat’s forward fin and white piping punctuate the statement." "#Onthisday in 1963, the Pan Am Building opened at 200 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The 59-story tower was the largest commercial office space in the world. Now called the MetLife Building, it remains an iconic part of the New York City skyline. Have you ever visited the Pan Am Building? Image: Pan American World Airways, New York City postcard, 1960s. "#Onthisday in 1949, Pan American World Airways introduced the Boeing 377 into service on the densely traveled San Francisco to Honolulu route. The 377, named the #Stratocruiser, was Boeing's first post-war commercial aircraft and was designed as a luxurious, long-range commercial airliner. Its spacious cabin could accommodate up to 100 passengers, depending on the seating configuration. It also featured a lower deck lounge, complete with a cocktail bar. The cost per airplane was $1.2 million at the time, or nearly $17 million today. Did you ever fly on a #Stratocruiser? Image: Pan American World Airways, Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, 1949. "Talk about in-flight entertainment! On some Pan American flights in the 1950s, inflight fashion shows were offered to traveling passengers. What a look! "#OnThisDay in 1939, Pan American received the delivery of their first Boeing 314. A massive and luxurious flying boat, the Boeing 314 was called a “flying hotel” by journalists of the day. Pan American ordered six of the original model, and six more B314A variants. The Boeing 314 was introduced to Pan American's Pacific Division and used to open its Atlantic service in 1939. Designed by Wellwood E. Beall, the 314 distinguished itself by sheer size, three vertical stabilizers on its tail, and cantilevered seawings that doubled as fuel tanks. A flight crew of up to ten was required to operate the "Super Clipper."" This was posted to our Instagram account on January 26, 2023 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1880151169/

Toller Abend! 👍
