“We shall fight them on the beaches…” Not Winston Churchill, but a reference to Whit Monday 1964 when Mods and Rockers clashed on Brighton beach. The two tribes set about each other with belts, chains, burning deckchairs and stones. This was the latest in a long line of Mods v Rockers “fixtures” - Clacton, Hastings, Margate, Bournemouth…

The Avengers (1961-69)
The Honor Blackman-Diana Rigg-Linda Thorson eras of The Avengers are well-documented, so here I’ll focus on the series’ origins and what might have been.

Soccer’s snowed-up 1962/63 season might run into June. So far, over 300 games have been postponed. Cricket is sure to protest, but it looks as if there will now be a major battle between the sports. Also, some football and cricket clubs share the same ground, so that issue also needs to be addressed.

Troops, helicopters and army “Ducks” stood by on a flood alert in the West Country last night as rivers, swollen by the thaw, rose bank high. Many rivers in Devon are expected to burst their banks today. In Carmarthen, Wales, fields are under water.
Lady Penelope’s Notes on the Beatles
1968 again sees the Beatles on top of the world in pop music. It is just five years now since they crashed on to the pop scene with Love Me Do. Today and every day they are conquering new heights. With a string of fabulous hit records shattering all sales records and another tremendous LP release already this year there is nothing to stop the Beatles.
This fantastically detailed document records the birth of Martha Cottrell, second child born to my 5 x great grandparents Samuel Cottrell and Ann Baker. The document includes the family’s address, the midwives present, the date and registration of the birth, and that the family were Protestant Dissenters.

Along with Doctor Who and Dixon of Dock Green, Juke Box Jury was a regular show in the Saturday teatime slot in the early 1960s.

“With some boys, I found an unexploded World War Two bomb. We took it home and said, ‘Look what we’ve found!’ The RAF evacuated the whole area and took the bomb away, but we got our names in the local paper for digging the bomb out of the mud and slime. It was my first headline.” - Christine Keeler in her autobiography, Secrets and Lies.
On 26 November 1821, my 5 x great grandparents Samuel Cottrell and Ann Baker married, at St. Botolph Bishopsgate, London. Samuel and Ann had been together for over two years, and had already produced a son, my 4 x great grandfather Matthew.

Fierce new blizzards last night threatened to block all roads to the West Country. They followed a day in which widespread snowfalls, six inches deep, brought fresh chaos to the roads in many areas. Road conditions are described as bad to worse to appalling.
Patrick McGoohan was one of the most interesting actors of the 1960s, with The Prisoner being his iconic series. All Night Long, a British film, b+w, 1962 is worth watching too. The story unfolds in one building over the course of a night. McGoohan plays a jazz drummer - a liar, a manipulator, a man incapable of giving or receiving love. The story highlights how destructive such people can be.

LOL - Normal for the 19th century.
People just made shit up if it was even slightly inconvenient to be 'accurate'. There was no concept that in 100+ years time anyone would be able to search the entire written database at the press of a button.
e.g. Back then no-one would have had any reason to suspect that my GGF was married twice at the same time and using different names for different jobs. :-)
