Nina S. Studer<p>Quote from: Trenga, Victor. L’âme arabo-berbère. Étude sociologique sur la société musulmane nord-africaine. Algiers: Homar, 1913, p. 174f.</p><p><a href="https://historians.social/tags/histmed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>histmed</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialMedicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialMedicine</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/FrenchColonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrenchColonialism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/Orientalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Orientalism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ImperialFeminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ImperialFeminism</span></a></p>
Nina S. Studer<p>This justified the colonial presence &amp; showed the allegedly failed assimilation of Muslim men: "A new society, made up of advanced Muslim men &amp; backward Muslim women, that is the bizarre &amp; absurd invention of these Neo-Frenchmen [... that they] would like us to accept!"</p><p><a href="https://historians.social/tags/histmed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>histmed</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialMedicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialMedicine</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/FrenchColonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrenchColonialism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/Orientalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Orientalism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ImperialFeminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ImperialFeminism</span></a></p>
Nina S. Studer<p>Many doctors &amp; psychiatrists pretended that France was fighting to liberate Muslim women, oppressed by Muslim men, in the North African colonies. In 1913, Trenga wrote that the subservient role of Muslim women "seems to us the true touchstone of the new Muslim spirit".</p><p><a href="https://historians.social/tags/histmed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>histmed</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialMedicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialMedicine</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/FrenchColonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrenchColonialism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/Orientalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Orientalism</span></a> <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ImperialFeminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ImperialFeminism</span></a></p>
Nina S. Studer<p>Have a look at my article, and if you work on <a href="https://historians.social/tags/HistoryOfPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryOfPsychiatry</span></a>, <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a>, <a href="https://historians.social/tags/HistoryOfRacism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryOfRacism</span></a>, <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ScientificRacism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScientificRacism</span></a>, <a href="https://historians.social/tags/FrenchColonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrenchColonialism</span></a>, <a href="https://historians.social/tags/Orientalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Orientalism</span></a> <br>&amp; more, please share so more in the field see it! The title is: "'Mahomet Implanted a Real Neuropathic State in the Brains of Believers': North African Masculinities and Colonial Psychiatry in the Writings of Maurice Boigey"!</p>
Nina S. Studer<p>This is a big one for me: My article on Maurice Boigey is now out &amp; it is <a href="https://historians.social/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> (<a href="https://www.sgg-ssh.ch/fr/szg/szg-rsh-rss-74-2024-no-3/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sgg-ssh.ch/fr/szg/szg-rsh-rss-</span><span class="invisible">74-2024-no-3/</span></a>)! Boigey wrote the most racist text on Muslims in all of French <a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a>, his "Psychological Study on Islam", in 1908 &amp; I found out that it was entirely plagiarised from an extremely problematic source! While Boigey has long been decried as the most extreme author in French <br><a href="https://historians.social/tags/ColonialPsychiatry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColonialPsychiatry</span></a>, this adds a completely new dimension to his legacy!</p>
