Very cool. Automated underground bike storage in Kyoto.

@JasonThorne How? I have questions
@JasonThorne
#alttext Small ground level building that looks like an entrance to an elevator. A woman arrives with her bicycle, places it in front of the door facing the door. There seem to be gooves on the floor that fit the wheels and she places the bike into them. She presses a button above the door and walks away leaving the bike. The door opens and the bike slides into the elevator and disappears. Cut. A different woman is standing next to the entrance, the door opens and a different bike slides out. She takes it, mounts the bike and rides away.
@JasonThorne More info on Kyoto’s automated underground bike storage, for those curious:
It’s called ECO cycle, by Giken Ltd. Parking is by monthly fee (~ $US 25/month). Installation cost ~$US 30k. At 200 bike spots, annual parking revenue would be ~$5k/yr, paying for itself in a little over 6 years.
An identifier tag is attached to the bike, which is paired with a smart card to retrieve it. They also make this above ground version (Mobile ECO cycle):

@JasonThorne
That wouldn't work in Germany.
@xtaran
Too much vandalism, to many stupid users. Too many customers who think, that they don't want to pay while they also think, service, which is free of charge is worthless.

They built a cycle storage scheme in my old home town.
It was basically the size of 2 containers stacked on top of each other, some bins you could mount your bike in vertically on either side, and some stairs going to the upper storage... meaning people had to 'carry' bikes up and down stairs to store them.
You had to provide your own lock, pay for the privilege of an exposed storage place where anyone could see into the lockers & see the best bikes. Guess what happened?
@JasonThorne Extremely cool! #Alt4You
An enclosed metal and glass structure maybe the size of a bus shelter, with a protective awning on one side.
A person walks up to the structure and aligns their bike on a track under the awning. As the person walks away, the door opens automatically and the bike gets sucked inside.
In the next scene, a person stands beside the track as the door opens and spits a different bike outside. The person climbs on and bikes away.
@JasonThorne @evelyn It's just not fair!
Alright. That's it. I'm moving to Kyoto!
@JasonThorne @Em0nM4stodon Id love this for not having my bike stolen. Miserable when that happened 10 years ago only months after getting it.
@JasonThorne Absolutely brilliant system for storing bikes, beats the bike racks we have here where individuals have to chain their bike on so it won’t get stolen. Unfortunately a system like that would only be feasible for half the year as riding a bike in 100°+ weather isn’t exactly fun. The bike I rode for years wouldn’t fit in one either. Should mention I live near and worked in Phoenix, Arizona.
@JasonThorne I need to see what it looks like down there
