1. Antisemitism is rising. Not just phony “ooo you can't criticize Israel” BS; real yes-actual antisemitism, from centrists to fascists to leftists.
2. Israel is committing yes-actual genocide in Gaza.
3. People are fighting to weaken, discredit, and undermine the institutions like the ICC, HRW, and Amnesty International that exist to fight genocide.
Do you all not see how completely non-contradictory these three truths are? Do you not see how •dangerous• (3) is in the context of (1)?
1/2
@inthehands (2) (the genocide) is enabling (1) (the antisemitism). But Netanyahu likes that, because the more vulnerable Jews feel, the more they will look for a ‘tough’ leader. It’s hard to imagine a more irresponsible strategy to maintain personal power.
Naomi Klein has written quite a bit about this. She says the education Jewish children receive is more of a holocaust re-trauma than an education. Klein believes that Jewish folks are being kept in their wounds and that this empowers the far right.
@FranceskaMann @inthehands It’s certainly also the case that Israeli children are educated to see Arabs as lesser beings. It’s a very broken country!
Ugly stuff. My American public education taught white supremacy too. We weren't taught about what really happened on Thanksgiving, or what misogyny looks like. By the way, misogyny looks like women earning $.79 on the dollar. today's American public schools have SRO's. These are armed police and they primarily target black and disabled children putting them on the school to prison pipeline.
They are a colonized country, like the United States.
@FranceskaMann @KimSJ @inthehands Elie Wiesel would've agreed with that. He once remarked that his grandchildren didn't know a lot about the Holocaust & clarified that this was ok with him, because he did know what it had been like.
@inthehands @KimSJ @FeralRobots
Naomi Klein's greater point is that Judaism has been around for thousands of years. Zionism is a new invention. She goes so far to say the teachings Judaism are in firm disagreement with Zionism.
@KimSJ
Ah yes, the antisemitism is the Jews fault. It is in fact a Jewish tool to manipulate the masses. Classic
@inthehands
It takes a hell of a lot of nuance to simultaneously hold the truths that Netanyahu is both exploiting and inflaming antisemitism and also that antisemitism is a clear and present danger that is absolutely not the fault of the people it targets. A lot of nuance. And nuance is…um…not having a great year.
@inthehands
No it isn't. I would even say that it's not having a great century. And I basically have zero trust for Internet reply guys to get it right when I don't see them even trying
@KimSJ
@alter_kaker
Fair, and I realize I should’ve said right off the bat that I appreciate your previous reply calling out the dangerous pattern here.
@alter_kaker one of the many reasons I don't engage on antisemitism, the holocaust, or Israel outside the Jewish community (except to express hostility and snark) is this inevitability that somehow all or part of it eventually becomes the Jews fault in any discussion.
Like a fucking merry go round you can't get off of.
@KimSJ@mastodon.social @inthehands
@KimSJ @inthehands I would say that yes, *manifestations* of antisemitism have risen, and Israel's crimes have created a permission structure for that. But antisemitic *attitudes* seem to be constant over time, and are old and, I suspect, embedded in our Christian traditional culture. Work to do, and the usual suspects aren't doing it.
@martinvermeer @KimSJ
Yeah, the attitudes are age-old, but we are definitely seeing a shift in what surfaces, what behaviors occur, what gets accepted, who has power.
