Things I didn't consider when leaving twitter:
"Which platform has the best UX?"
"What's best for my audience and career?"
"Where are my friends going?"
However... (a thread) (1/7)
"Which platform has the best UX?"
With the @elk client, my user experience of mastodon is now better than it ever was for twitter
and for any problems I've had, I've been able to raise issues and contribute changes
AND it's still in alpha!
I can't imagine how good it'll be in a year from now...
(2/7)
@elk "What's best for my audience and career?"
In my work and life, I want to be known as someone who is "genuine" and honest.
The easiest way for me to do this is to just... "be genuine"
So, for me, part of that is following my heart and doing what feels right, regardless of its impact on my career
AND I'm now getting... MORE engagement than I did on twitter!?!? this wasn't supposed to happen!!
(3/7)
@elk "Where are my friends going?"
I didn't expect so many people to move to mastodon so soon!?
The friends that *have* moved here with me... I feel even more connected to them now.
Everyone's so much more... authentic(!) here
Is it something to do with this? Tweets are written for an algorithm.
Toots are written for humans.
AND I'm now finding and following more people than I ever did on twitter... this is not how they said it would go!!!
(4/7)
@elk But no...
When I left twitter, I only considered one thing:
"By using twitter, am I directly supporting evil nut-heads who don't want me and my friends to exist?"
(5/7)
@elk "evil nut-heads"
I'm no stranger to transphobia and hate speech, but I really hoped that things would get better over time (not worse)!
So when presented with a real-world incarnation of a badly written cartoon villain, the least I can do is not be one of those side-characters in a movie that makes me go, "That's so unrealistic! Noone would actually go along with the evil plan!"
Not everyone can readily abandon their twitter audience, but I sure can, and you might too
(6/7)
@elk With all of that in mind, I'm now going to do a year of posting to mastodon! (no twitter)
It's MASTODON YEAR
See you there? :)
@davepagurek @elk awesome! no problem :)
@TodePond well, i certainly see you. what a delight !
i love your videos and projects, and i'm excited to see you here. welcome to the real internet !
@sofia hey thank you very much!! and I'm glad to be here! :D
@TodePond beautiful and resonating thoughts and the images are just GORGEOUS, Lu <3
@murilove Thanks Murilo! Glad you were one of the first people I recognised over here :)
@TodePond I can't hide how happy I was to see you around and now to know you'll stick for a year! hihihi
@TodePond I suspect the increased character limit may contribute to it as well. Less emphasis on quick meme-like posts, and more emphasis on sharing complete thoughts and exploring ideas.
Unfortunately some people I followed on twitter haven't moved yet. Have any recommendations of people like you, who post #generative #art?
@bigbass yes its default length seems to be a bit of a sweetspot! Depends what you enjoy, but I found so many people to follow by going through the #genuary hashtag! I should keep boosting people... and I think I'll join in with #FollowFriday like @walpolea suggested!
@TodePond Will keep that in mind, thanks.
@TodePond it feels like a better future
