“Anti-shark cages have worked well at keeping divers safe - we ask, are they still necessary and should we stop using them given the risks are now so low?”
“We talked to 3 sharks in the waters of Martha’s Vineyard and their answer might surprise you.”
I wish I had not had to counter this type of argument in real life. Especially as my real life was infection prevention.
@andymoose @Edelruth I'm glad that sharks aren't like covid, and when someone decides to not use a shark cage, it doesn't lead to inadvertently bringing sharks home to eat their family and friends.
@mikemccaffrey Er ...
Sharks are well known for being attracted by blood in the water. If somebody decides to behave in a way that causes a shark to dismantle them, which is necessarily a pretty bloody affair, odds are pretty good that it will result in more sharks showing up.
@andymoose "Why are you still in your anti-shark cages? You don't need to be afraid." - Not a shark, apparently.
@andymoose we've had so many years without an incident we should save the terribly high cost and productivity impact these cages cause.
Same for the FDA, CFPB, ...
@andymoose
And Glass-Seageal was only a temporary crutch until banks learned to properly regulate themselves.
@andymoose it's time for pro-shark cages to claim their rightful place
@andymoose Since the risks are so low now, we should stop counting the accidents/deaths before we get rid of the cages.
@andymoose
1.35 million deaths from car accidents per year.
~10 deaths from shark attacks per year.
I think we should have anti-car cages instead.
@wakame @andymoose perhaps just ban them in places where population exceeds 2/acre. The cars can roam free in unsettled rural areas.
Sharks deserve a fair chance against divers invading their space.
@andymoose That said, I always wear a mask before diving with sharks.
@andymoose also have you considered how sharks feel being discriminated like this?!
@andymoose Sure. Shark bites are not contagious.
@andymoose We could reframe them as anti-diver cages to keep the sharks safe.
@andymoose And fire precautions:
"When was the last time someone got killed in an office fire in the UK?"
"It doesn't happen."
"So why are we wasting all this money on smoke detectors, fire alarms, fire doors, fire drills?"
@andymoose Elon Musk on X: "I heard that shark cages are often used by foreigners. This is a very important point, people should look into this."
