Amazon Fire Tablets and other gear will reportedly switch away from Android
TVs, Echo Show, and other gear could sport Amazon's in-house replacement soon.
@arstechnica I wish I'd gotten an Android TV rather than an Fire TV. The fire TV is just a big billboard that happens to also stream video.
@atocci @arstechnica It's just that fire goes to all the extra effort to limit customization. For example their photo 'screensaver' shows advertisements in addition to photos, and there's not an obvious way to disable those ads. It seems fire TV is riddled with this kind of stuff.
@arstechnica Well, the cheap tablets and emulator sticks were nice while they lasted
@arstechnica
The thing I got from this is that Amazon's tablets are so cheap because they're running outdated software.
@arstechnica This is shooting yourself in the foot with a mininuke.
I say that because we all know Amazon will lock it down or be even more intrusive.
@arstechnica Good. More competition for Google.
@arstechnica The one Fire Tablet I bought was horrible. Slow, crappy hardware and terribly outdated/poorly maintained apps. I don't think this move helps with either of those issues as at least before they got some for free with Android. Everything Fire* at Amazon has not impressed me. Kindle still works well, but probably because it's purpose built and there is no expected app ecosystem…
