AI in space: Karpathy suggests AI chatbots as interstellar messengers to alien civilizations
Andrej Karpathy muses about sending a LLM binary that could "wake up" and answer questions.
@arstechnica VoyagerGPT: "Hello! I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help I'm happy to help--"
alien xenobiologists: "this species seems to get stuck in repetition easily"
@arstechnica Bobiverse is becoming real. Nice.
@arstechnica That idea sounds suicidal! We can't even rely on a LLM to answer simple questions accurately.
@arstechnica Ah, so instead of sending a message of hope and greetings to the stars, like with Voyager, we send a nonsense vortex. Great.
@arstechnica Talk about insanity
@arstechnica How about we simulate it first?
@arstechnica what a terrible idea. just send a copy of Wikipedia. Less resource intensive, more reliable.
And then the LLM causes an interstellar incident with the first alien civilization it encounters.
Hilarity ensues when an invasion force reaches our solar system and broadcasts the garbled nonsense of the probe's LLM before opening fire...
@arstechnica We have to *at least* figure out how to get them to give correct answers to basic arithmetic questions.
I could also imagine that, in a large enough interstellar community, those things would be indistinguishable from spam (or worse, be recognized as a symptom of a species doomed to a technology singularity).
@arstechnica
Aliens: “Well, the probe said a human named Benjamin Franklin was their leader, they all wanted death, and an animal species called a duck was a color called purple. Have we found the duck-animal yet? That’s last on the list…”
@arstechnica if you want to disappoint or confuse the aliens then go for it
@arstechnica Fire that probe right into the Torment Nexus and see what happens.
@arstechnica why is this bullshit considered news?
@arstechnica Karpathy need to get sent to an asylum post-haste.
People may laugh, but if we're going to explore other systems, we're going to have to do it vicariously through our AI avatars.
Space is too big, and humans are too short-lived, heavy, and fragile.
@arstechnica Please stop him
@arstechnica Ah, like Jor-El?
@arstechnica Yeah. Leave first contact to a piece of semi-sentient software. That'll go well.
@arstechnica jesus back-flipping christ, this is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard
