Should we re-brand the “rest of the Fediverse” as “Mastodon+”?

@fediversenews I don’t know how Mastodon gGmbh would feel about Calckey or Friendica being referred to as “Mastodon+”.

But it intrigues me.

Someone is going to seriously take Akkoma, bolt it to Mastodon’s front end, and sell it as “Mastodon+”.

😂

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social They're pretty serious about defending their trademark, aren't they?

And, I mean, as they should be. They don't want to lose it.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews It also intrigues me how everything is mastodon, just like every song is named Megalovania

@atomicpoet getting "this image requires a gold account" vibes here

@atomicpoet Pleroma used to do that with Glitch's variant of the Mastodon front end

huge improvement over the native Pleroma front end, tbh

@atomicpoet I run #Akkoma and I cannot believe I'm ahead of the curve! It's "tidy" as they say in
stroud.socialAkkoma
@atomicpoet it already has masto fe. If you really want it.

And this is just noise.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I think the enhanced versions of Mastodon feels more like Mastodon+(+), while Calckey or Frendica would be Rust or Go.

(Trying out calckey, to see how it goes. But it’s feels like a much “more” product. If I really like it I hope my server could convert over to it in the future. I’m not terribly married to Mastodon, the fediverse is the secret sauce.)

@Chris Trottier @Grassroots Joe And I don't know how @Mario Vavti and @mike would react upon the implication that the #Fediverse only consists of #Mastodon and stuff bolted onto Mastodon, including their projects, #Hubzilla and #Streams.

For the record: Hubzilla is from 2012. When Mastodon was launched, Hubzilla had already been around for a whopping four years. AFAIK, Hubzilla adopted #ActivityPub around the same time as Mastodon and not because Mastodon used it. Even when Hubzilla was created, then still being a fork of Mike's own #Friendica and named Red, it had a set of features that outclassed 2023's Mastodon by magnitudes.

So no, Hubzilla is not another Mastodon knock-off, nor has it ever jumped upon the Mastodon bandwagon. In fact, the Hubzilla devs refuse to let themselves be bullied into doing things Mastodon's own, non-standard ways just because Mastodon has the most users and instances.

Also, while Mastodon switched to ActivityPub as its base protocol, Hubzilla stuck to Mike's own #Zot from 2011 which, in turn, has features that many wish ActivityPub had. On Hubzilla, ActivityPub is an add-on, an optional one no less.

And here I thought we were talking about how to help random prospective users grok the existence of micro/mini blogging options beyond Mastodon in the Fediverse.
If it might hurt someone's feelings for a few minutes, I guess we should just drop it...
