So, this thing looks amazing - like the most impressive 3D device I've ever seen. Massive kudos to all the teams involved. I'd love to have one and make stuff for it.
But $3499? (plus custom lenses, etc). That I did not expect.
@jamesthomson that's been the rumor for ages lol
@dominic The rumour was $3k.
@jamesthomson I don’t see how this takes off without a similar to original iPhone price drop
@jamesthomson Yeah, I was fairly convinced by the "it'll be like the iPad launch" theories... and then he started upselling us with the what-it-replaces talk...
@kemayo Exactly.
@jamesthomson It's certainly expensive but, assuming the technology is as great as advertised, I'm not quite sure how they'd get it too much farther south of that price.
@jamesthomson not bad considering an XDR is 2x that.
@jamesthomson but it’s the pro version. Just get the regular instead…. in three years.
@jamesthomson How much is a trip for a family to Disney World these day? Just get Apple Vision Pro and Disney+ instead. It’s a bargain!
@jamesthomson Apple nailed it!
They did justify the price by mentioning all the monitors and speakers you would need to do the same things it can do.
@JoeBeam It's very impressive, but I am genuinely shocked at the price.
@jamesthomson Same, there is no way for me to justify buying one.
I am wishing for a lot of disposable income right now.
Microsoft, Meta, and Google must be sweating a little right now.
@jamesthomson my favorite part was them selling it as a replacement device for your tv, computer, audio system, etc. As if many of us do not share our living space with other people. And I am not handing this to my 7 year old to watch Disney+.
@jamesthomson Battery included?
@jamesthomson inflation adjusted it’s cheaper than the original Mac in 1984. (1,198.39 1984 $)
@jamesthomson yeah same, I’d love to try it but I can’t stomach that price
@jamesthomson Well, I thought of at least 3.000$ - so I wasn’t surprised about the price…
@jamesthomson
Once they started going over all the technology in Vision Pro, it was obvious it wasn’t going to be anywhere near $2000.
@jamesthomson I can write off against tax. Already wanting to increase my desktop display. No way I’d go outside in them. Really need real word wearability data (and my glasses)
@jamesthomson
The first iPod was $688 in inflation adjusted dollars.
@jamesthomson *starts at* $3499. Probably with 16GB of storage.
@jamesthomson I notice that it's Vision “Pro” - so there’ll likely be a cheaper Vision “Air" version in two years, probably without the Zombie eyes feature, and maybe with a less comfortable rubber band, but in six exciting colours.
@denis For only $2000.
@jamesthomson It seems that at this price, only a specific subset of people with disposable money will be buying them. The Developers that would support the apps wouldn't even be able to test them. It's pretty sad.
I'd also not like to be seen with that facehugging thing. I forget his name, but the person in charge of AR/VR - Vision Pro; it looked like at one point he had on some thick black Buddy Holly glasses. Maybe they're the Vision Glasses, not Pro?
@JPZ They wouldn't accidentally show some future product, I'm sure.
@JPZ No, definitely not.
@jamesthomson Cheaper than two Studio Displays, and that's basically what they’ve got stuck in them…
@jamesthomson BTW reflecting over the price... This device is super specced, I am sure they had some other prototype with fewer features (say, 6 cameras, not 12) and a smaller wow factor (while still being a big wow) that could have been priced at 1500€. Going for the "super expensive" product was a marketing choice. It follows that either a) they don't believe fully in it and want a safe exit if it flops b) they wanted it to be an early-adopter device, like the first Teslas, to gather data etc.
@jamesthomson hopefully the FX price will be favourable when it releases in the UK but I won’t hold my breath for a sub £3k price.
I do want to replace my two LG Ultrafiiine 5K displays and this is price-comparable to a couple of studio displays.
We’ve all got plenty of time to work on our tenuous personal justifications for buying it!
