@ChanceHMiller I think there are two main scenarios: “we fucked up a software update” or “we got hacked”. I would very much like to know which!

In an age when we are constantly on alert for being hacked/phished/scammed Apple owes an explanation and I would say if this was a back end maintenance or update issue (both of which can cause unexpected problems) a warning ahead of time.

@WarnerCrocker @jamesthomson @ChanceHMiller I have a feeling that it is the later, especially if it (mainly) impacted DotMac users, which might have been much vulnerable than iCloud. You don’t suddenly force tons of users to update their password on the weekend for no reason.

But Apple being Apple, I won’t hold my breath over a formal and honest explanation.
