“Many times when I identified as Libertarian, people said to me, “It’s just rich white guys that don’t want to be told what to do,” and I had a zillion answers to that — and now that seems 100 percent accurate.” https://www.cracked.com/amp/article_40871_penn-jillette-wants-to-talk-it-all-out.html
@codinghorror That's the problem with language. Originally, libertarianism was closer to anarchy than democracy. They should be using neo-libertarian to describe themselves more accurately.
It's still technically accurate. The very best appropriation usually is.
Just a matter of asking them who, in their worldview, has the liberty to do what.
@kozy138 @codinghorror Agreed. Any time I do that "political compass" test I come out as left libertarian. Only recently twigged that means I'm basically an anarchist.
They're libertarian capitalist, which is a completely different breed from libertarian socialists. They shouldn't get to be seen as the primary examples of libertarianism, because they're not. Also, some of them have extraordinarily weird views about slavery.
