nixCraft 🐧

Who used to do this?😁

@nixCraft What do you mean used to? I still do it when using windows XD

@nixCraft still do, but with `while :; do ls -l ...`

@keithpjolley @nixCraft not me. I used the mouse pointer. Don't want to leave fingerprints on the screen.

@nixCraft what kind of barbarian uses his/her/their finger? Use the mouse pointer! =D

And yes, I still do when installing things in Proxmox over VSAT connections =D

@nixCraft in my childhood there were no progress bars... only the cool sound of the program on tape

@nixCraft I still do this but not with my finger, I use one corner of the file manager window

@Walop @davehay @nixCraft in all fairness he could also be stuck in traffic in any typical US city or suburb.

@davehay @nixCraft likewise Meater BBQ time til finished

@davehay @nixCraft oh, that's every app's "done bar" i've ever seen.

@nixCraft I always made a line with a permanent marker on the screen. Like the crosshair in Ego Shooters 🙂

@nixCraft I used to recommend to others to tilt the monitor so the "liquid" could flow faster. They didn't so they had to wait the full time :P

@nixCraft yep, when it was especially slow, I would open another window like notepad or so and line the border up with the progress bar.

@nixCraft I sort of did that. I think I used something on the screen (such as another window) check the bar.

@nixCraft still do (more for loading screens these days though)

@nixCraft

Sort of. I was far from a child, but I can remember downloading the latest version of Netscape over a dial up connection.

I would set it going, then go for a long walk to have dinner at a Chinese takeout.

What I do remember as a kid would be sending away for packages and looking at the mailbox everyday for a month after school until the package finally came.

@nixCraft I used a Post It on my screen and walked away.

@nixCraft I use the mouse pointer for this o.o

@nixCraft this just unlocked a long lost childhood memory!

@nixCraft These kids today with their overnight oats, WE USED TO HAVE OVERNIGHT JPGS

@nixCraft It's why the mouse cursor has a sharp vertical line on one side, isn't it???

@user89073862 you mean ALT text? If so, I just added it.

@nixCraft
And then, finally arrived at 99%, it took foreveeeeer! 🙃

@nixCraft or being told it take days or months to complete a download

@nixCraft
From now on I'll add a slide rule cursor movable by mouse/touch to my loading bars, to comfort users.
@eniko

@nixCraft Placing the mouse cursor is fine, too.

@nixCraft still doing this whenever there is a slow progression bar :blobcat:

@nixCraft

Someone at Microsoft: "Let's animate it to make it look like it's moving."

Everyone else: "I want to punch whoever animated this to make it looks like it's moving."

@nixCraft i still download my childhood this way...
@nixCraft I still put the mouse cursor on the indicator sometimes… (instead of a finger)
@nixCraft Which makes me wish progress indicators would all have visible steps so you wouldn't have to do this in the first place.
@nixCraft I still do this except I move another window to the progress bar edge.

@nixCraft I used my mouse, not my finger tho. Dirty.

@nixCraft @QueenOfCoffee I did something like that (mouse pointer, not finger) just today, because an installer was looking like an installed. As it were.
