Friend: Why do you have a printer, and a laser one at that? Just store files in the cloud and share them. No need to print!
Me: Yeah, right. Like I want my !sensitive documents floating around in the cloud for who-knows-who to peek at. Besides, sometimes you just need a hard copy... like when the Wi-Fi's down and or certain Tax/GST departments insist on tax-paid receipts along with a paper by the end of each financial year.!
Cloud is someone else's computer, and there are many cases where your Google or whatever cloud you use deactivates your account for many reasons. As a seasoned IT person, I won't even trust printers connecting to the Internet. Forget about storing files on the cloud. Now, they are using your files to train AI by tricking and hiding training options. You can't trust 3rd party.
@nixCraft ask Tom Pohl about trusting printers: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xaCiIyQ5QXM
Summary: a networked printer is a hackers best friend!
@nixCraft I also don't trust any printer that is connected to the internet.
My family calls me paranoid, but I'm sure I'm not.
@nixCraft eh, so you don't trust self hosted NextCloud that you host? also OKD exist BTW
@bargo just ftp server is more than sufficient for my needs
@nixCraft yes, FTP suffices on many cases, it's just when you want to synchronize your smartphone data, I mean, syncing all your apps & data in 1 go without losing a ton of time is hard without another app, or your phone contacts, yes you can just use your brain to planify the backup every X time, but what to do when you find yourself in a situation where you can't? remember that 99% of things in the world exist & have success because they resolve real problems, you just need to research
@nixCraft for example, BT buds, I hated them & did not imagine myself using them, let's not mention that the majority of newer phones don't have an audio jack port, the first problem is the entanglement of wires in the pocket for example, the second problem which is not very far is that wires degrade, third problem is that BT became much more reliable than copper....
@nixCraft Thank you for reminding me, I should change the firewall settings for the printer...
@nixCraft well you can still use stuff like Syncthing to mirror data across your personal devices. I keep a lot of my stuff in Joplin and then sync it with my phone, k8s cluster, and Synology. No 3rd-party cloud required.
