@nixCraft I doubt these are the motivations to ban TikTok. Let's ask them to ban X for the same reasons and see how that goes.
While that's true (I've never had a Tiktok account and never felt the lack), it sets a disturbing precedent. I stand with the ACLU on this.

I have legal and philosophical problems with banning software, but they're Chinese, so screw 'em. They play games with our stuff. People should just Do Better™, and simply not use it out of choice. Applies to a lot of other shitware/services also.
I'm all for it. Let's ditch YT Shorts as well, some of that stuff is just so utterly vile.

@nixCraft this take seems misguided. No doubt there are major problems with Tiktok (and other big tech social media platforms) but there’s a lot of great content there (I don’t have it but my wife does). Denying this seems counterproductive in terms of understanding how to make the fediverse more welcoming and diverse.

@nixCraft Just banning TikTok won't stop people's phone addiction, because there will always have alternative of TikTok (eg Instagram Reals).
Imo, you can ban as many apps as you want, the real issue is how people interact with their phones.
Furthermore, as a TikTok user, I saw many artists and content creator growing up thanks to this community. I've discovered a lot of songs thanks to TikTok. So if you ban TikTok, you put at risk some artist.
However instead of banning TikTok, we can create law to regulate the contents available on the app, and protect the users
