Pete Prodoehl 🍕

Fired up the 2007 Mac mini and it seems to be working just fine!

It's running Mac OS X 10.7.5 and I was using it (mostly as a music player) up until 2020.

It's a got FireWire 400 port so a friend wants to use it to connect an old iPod...

Meanwhile I have a Dell laptop that was probably half that age and it just fucking straight up died. Looked up the issue and found posts saying it's the main logic board and pretty much unrepairable.

I know Apple sucks in many ways but damn, they built hardware that could last.

(Also evidenced by the mint condition 2010 MacBook Pro someone gave me a few months back.)

@rasterweb Our iMac is newer than those, but still 11 years old and very rarely turned off. Can't update the OS at this point, but it's still chugging along

@rasterweb I have a 2008 MacPro works great.

@fistfulofdave Yeah! I sold my 2010 MacPro a few years ago... I kid drove down from Minneapolis to buy it. I threw in an Apple Display, Apple Keyboard, and a mouse.

We've reached a point where hardware is advanced enough to continue to function unless the software developer chooses to stop supporting it. I'm particularly interested in things like the Framework laptop because it is infinitely upgradeable, which helps reduce e-waste. I wish I wasn't so tied to the Apple ecosystem, as I've had to replace several Apple devices simply because they needed more RAM. Even now, I wish I hadn't settled for just 32GB in my M1 MBP.

@rasterweb The Mac Classic I kept at my work office for fun. We’d play Oregon Trail during lunch. Still works!

@chuck Decades ago I would hear people complain about the cost of Apple hardware and I would tell them that those things would last forever!

@rasterweb at day job. I have a 0% failure rate on the minis. I’m considering not buying spares next time.

@rasterweb After we met (SF Maker Faire 2018) I wanted to remember your name pronunciation so I put a note in my contact list as reminder: "pronounced like pro dell" even though you are not pro-Dell. Sorry.

@regorlas Nice! I've been know to say "Prodoehl, rhymes with 'go to hell'" 😜

@regorlas I actually really liked the Dell laptop I had. I mean, I didn't really like Windows, and I mainly used it for hardware testing, but I was pretty disappointed when it died.

I ended up getting a super-cheap mini PC (under $100 USD) running Windows as my replacement hardware testing system.

@rasterweb For the sake of a data point, may I ask what product line your departed Dell was from?

In my experience, units from Dell's consumer line (Inspiron, XPS) have not held up, but their corporate offerings (Latitude, OptiPlex, Precision) keep on trucking.

Of course I'm too cheap to pay the price premium, so I let some corporation pay it and buy after end of lease. (dellrefurbished.com/)

Though even with coupon codes they won't be remotely price-competitive with super cheap mini-PCs.
