The Liberux Nexx (liberux.net/) seems like it could be the #LinuxPhone I've been waiting for (assuming, RK3588s does not burn through that battery in minutes ;-) )

You can follow them @Liberux

(Thanks @awai for the hint!)

WOW, I think our little secret has been revealed, we hope that in a short time you will be able to see the first functional prototypes. We are working very hard on it, by the way, all our designs, both hardware and software, will be free. At the moment the web is a first version, some things will be modified.

@BUF0 @linmob @awai Is this device running on a (close to) mainline kernel? No halium involved, right?

@rolandlo @linmob @awai
Exactly, Linux without Halium :)

@BUF0 @rolandlo @linmob @awai I assume this runs kernel 6.1.84 as of right now?

@BUF0

Does the project have a mastodon account?

@maryjane @linmob @awai
Yes, we will start posting soon @Liberux

@BUF0 @linmob @awai Is there a kill switch for the GSM modem/processor?

@BUF0 @linmob @awai This seems like a great project! Little bit sad to see it will come with it's own distro though, imo hardware vendors should not focus on shipping their own OS but instead make sure existing mainstream options work well with it (by mainlining and using open-source drivers ofc!). A lot of people will want to install a distro they're already familiar with anyway.

@bart @BUF0 @linmob @awai yeah too bad they chose to roll their own OS... that rarely works out well long term for OEMs 🤷‍♂️

@craftyguy @bart @BUF0 @linmob @awai I wonder how we could make postmarketOS more attractive to vendors...?

@justsoup @craftyguy @BUF0 @linmob @awai Good question, I'd love to hear from vendors like these!
We are hard at work "professionalising" and making updates more stable with systemd and in the future immutable images, hopefully that'll help!

@justsoup
I also wonder, because i am sure most vendors heard of it, but decided against it?
At least they could have got in touch to clarify it is not suitable.
I canot understand it from both social and more importantly economical (work hours) perspective.
@craftyguy @bart @BUF0 @linmob @awai

@bart @BUF0 @linmob IMHO it depends on the diff with the upstream distro, but for rolling out a product it makes sense as vendors usually need a fair share of customizations, at least in the early days.

The trap here is the risk of ending up in the "we have our stuff working, no need to bother with upstreaming" zone, so I'm just hoping it won't happen 🤞

(note: ofc I'd prefer getting Mobian contributions rather than another mobile-focused Debian derivative 😉)

@awai @BUF0 @linmob Sure but those customizations could just be a repo for any distro rather than rolling out a full distro themselves 😉

Yes Mobian contributions would be great, with possibly a small custom repo on top with some branding and early days maybe some hardware support but it should be the goal to get rid of that.

@bart @BUF0 @linmob Agreed, a small overlay is way easier to maintain than forking/rebuilding the world (see PureOS)

@bart @BUF0 @linmob Although packaging is still important, so I'm wary of the "any distro" approach: better have something tailored for one (set of) upstream distro and ensure this works, rather than try to provide resources for everyone; other distros can (and should) repackage by themselves IMHO, which is what we're all doing for other mobile devices.

@awai @BUF0 @linmob I don't mean managing repos for multiple distros. They could (and probably should) just choose one, but that one could be "any".
